File:Finding a short by voltage drop (diagram).png
Summary
[edit | edit source]Diagram of finding a short circuit by following the voltage drop. A low-voltage, current-limited bench supply is connected to a supply rail track that is shorted to ground at D. With the meter on a millivolt range and one lead at the supply's connection, the reading grows from A to D along the copper that carries the current, reads the same at the end of a branch (E) as where the branch leaves the rail (B), and stops changing past the short (F). No values are shown. Used on Finding Short Circuits.

[edit | edit source]Drawn for this wiki in October 2026. The method follows LarryD, "Locating short circuits on PCBs", Arduino Forum, 3 March 2019 (relative millivolt readings along the shorted trace; branches with equal readings carry no current), and the EEVblog forum thread "How to find short?" (follow the voltage gradient).
