Acorn FileStore Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

Three Acorn documents for the Acorn FileStore range of Econet file servers (E01, E20, E01S, E40S and E60S) are hosted here: the FileStore Service Manual, the APP 150 leaflet and Acorn's list of Econet and FileStore error codes.

FileStore Service Manual

[edit | edit source]

The FileStore Service Manual is Acorn Computers' dealer service manual for the FileStore E01 and E20 and the Stacking FileStore E01S, E40S and E60S, part number 0482,001, issue 1, dated 21 September 1989 and published by Acorn's Technical Publications Department. The hosted PDF has 164 pages. It is a retyped edition made in Microsoft Word in 2010 (the PDF metadata names Mark Ferns and Mark Usher), with the drawings of Appendix C added as scanned images at the end. The retyping keeps a number of OCR errors, such as "l" for "1" in figures, "Darn lines" for data lines and "SET" for SEL.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Supply limits for each unit: E01S drive connector +5 V 5.0 to 5.25 V and +12 V 11.4 to 12.6 V, E20 and E40S/E60S +5 V 4.9 to 5.2 V and +12 V 11.4 to 12.6 V, with expected currents (pp. 47, 77 to 79, 99).
  • The backup cell: a 3.6 V NiCd (part 0817,000) on both base unit boards, charged by a constant-current circuit (pp. 18, 70, parts lists).
  • The polarised capacitors on the E01, E01S and E20 host adaptor boards (parts lists pp. 116 to 130).
  • Acorn's three-stage fault finding for the base units: printer line feed at power-up with the flap open, network link, then the dealer test suite (pp. 25, 80).

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No circuit or component list for any of the switch-mode power supplies. They appear only as assemblies (for example E01S PSU 0182,015), and the hard disc units' drives, controller boards and supplies are listed as exchange items (p. 37).
  • No circuit for the E40S or E60S beyond the SCSI bus description.
  • In this edition the E01S disassembly steps (1) to (9) on p. 61 are missing; only the headings and the remaining steps survive. The E40S/E60S procedure on pp. 91 to 93, which covers the same case, is complete.

FileStore leaflet APP 150

[edit | edit source]

Acorn's two-page leaflet Filestore, APP 150, first edition, September 1988, covers the E01S, E40S and E60S: two 800 KB floppy drives in the E01S, 40 and 60 MB hard disc units, up to four hard disc units (240 MB) per E01S, and up to 80 users logged on, with about twenty served satisfactorily by one E01S.

Econet Level II, III and FileStore error codes

[edit | edit source]

A 12-page Acorn customer support list of file server error numbers (for example &21 "Cannot find Password file" and &36 "Invalid window address"), each with the software area that raises it and a suggested fix, followed by Winchester error codes with a key to the likely cause (cables, host adaptor, controller, drive or power supply). It is undated.
