What it covers

[edit | edit source]

The technical specification on page 2 gives the Z80A at 4 MHz, 64K of RAM (over 42K available to the user), 32K of ROM holding BASIC and the operating system, the 6845 CRT controller, the GI AY-3-8912 (three voices, seven octaves) and the 8255 parallel interface. The keyboard unit measures 580 × 70 × 170 mm and weighs 2.4 kg. The power supply entry reads "Screen System: 240V AC 50Hz (keyboard and datacorder power supplied by screen system)", and the 5 mm power socket is "supplied exclusively from screen".

The CPC464 electrical parts list on page 17 gives value, circuit reference and Amstrad part number for the resistors, capacitors, ICs, transistors, diodes and connectors on the main PCB (100-series references) and the cassette PCB (300-series). It names, among others, the Z8400APS CPU (IC111), the TMM-23256P-1950 ROM (IC103), the 20RA043 gate array (IC116, part 40007), eight HM4864U-2 DRAMs (IC117–124) and the 16 MHz crystal (X101). It does not list three ceramics in the 16 MHz oscillator that the circuit diagram (pp. 15 and 16) and the main PCB drawing (pp. 12 to 14) both show: C103 (22 pF NPO), C129 (100 pF) and C130 (68 pF). The list gives C101 and C102 (47 µF) and C308 and C318 (22 µF) as 10 V parts, but the main PCB drawing marks C101 and C102 "16V47" and the cassette PCB drawing (p. 7) marks C308 and C318 "16V22". C314 shares a line and part number with C309 and C311 (1 µF 50 V), but it is non-polarised: the cassette PCB drawing marks it "50V1 BP" and the cassette deck circuit diagram (p. 8) "N.P". The GT64 and CTM640 sections each have their own electrical parts list, alignment instructions and a voltage chart.

The "basic hardware analysis" on page 9 is a fault-finding flow chart that starts at the monitor and its mains fuse and works through the DC lead, keyboard, connectors and chips. Page 10 adds the cassette and software checks and notes that full CPU diagnostics need Amstrad's RP1 Test Pack. The safety test on page 2 is a 4 kV flash test between the mains lead and exposed metal and an insulation test requiring at least 4 MΩ.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • Later main board versions. Amstrad's amendment manual reissues the CPC464 section for a later board with the 40010 gate array.
  • The DDI-1 disc interface, which has its own manual.
  • A text layer, so the parts list cannot be searched.
