Apple ImageWriter Documentation
Apple's documentation for the Apple ImageWriter (and the ImageWriter 15-inch): the user's manual, the main logic board schematic, the service Technical Procedures in Apple's Cross Family Peripherals, Volume Two, and the Peripheral Interface Guide. The same Technical Procedures volume also contains the Apple ImageWriter II and ImageWriter II/L manuals; for the earlier parallel printer see Apple Dot Matrix Printer Documentation.
User's manual (1983)
[edit | edit source]The Apple ImageWriter User's Manual, © 1983, reorder number A9L0303. The scan has 136 PDF pages and no text layer.[1]
Contents
[edit | edit source]Page numbers are the manual's own.[1]
- Getting to Know Your Printer: unpacking, names of parts, exterior features, the inside of the machine, controls and indicators, how the printer works.
- Setting Up Your Printer (p. 15): pin-feed and plain paper, top of page, paper thickness, the ribbon, testing and connecting the printer, operating environment.
- Controlling Your Printer (p. 31): DIP switch settings and the control codes for pitch, proportional spacing, foreign characters, underlining, boldface, headline type, line feed, margins, page length and paper error detection.
- Advanced Control Codes (p. 53): the input buffer, tabs, custom characters, and printing graphics in column-oriented and line-oriented modes.
- Appendixes (p. 77): troubleshooting (A), command summary (B), ASCII codes (C), character specifications (D), printer specifications (E), interface specifications (F) and firmware modifications (G); glossary (p. 109) and index (p. 115). A quick reference card follows.
Main logic board schematic, 050-0089-A
[edit | edit source]Apple's two-sheet D-size schematic for the ImageWriter main logic board, drawing 050-0089-A, revision A ("initial release"). It has no text layer.[2]
- Sheet 1, logic: an 8085AH-2 processor (IC 10) with a 9.8304 MHz crystal, a 27128 EPROM (IC 21), TMM2016P static RAMs, two 8155H-2 RAM and I/O chips, the 8251 serial controller (IC 28) with 75188 and 75189A line driver and receiver to the DB-25 serial connector CN 7, the control panel connector CN 6, the two DIP switch banks, and the VR1 timing adjustment.
- Sheet 2, power and drivers: the rear 2 A fuse, noise filter, power switch and transformer with 120 V (240 V) and 100 V (220 V) taps; on the board, FU1 and FU2 (3 A) feeding the logic supply bridge, a 2SB688 pass transistor with a µPC7805 regulator for +5 V, and FU3 (5 A) feeding the VM supply with a 15,000 µF 35 V reservoir capacitor; the nine dot head drivers to CN 4; and the carriage motor (CN 3) and line feed motor (CN 1) drivers.[2]
Technical Procedures volume (1991)
[edit | edit source]Apple Service Technical Procedures, Cross Family Peripherals, Volume Two, PN 072-0230, is a 521-page scan with a text layer. The title page is dated May 1990 and the contents page November 1991; individual pages carry revision dates from August 1983 to November 1991.[3] It contains three manuals:
- ImageWriter Technical Procedures (PDF pp. 8-109): Section 1, introduction, self-test, configuration switches, periodic maintenance (p. 1.11) and maintenance schedule (p. 1.12); Section 2, take-apart from the switch panel to the carrier drive transistor assembly and noise filter; Section 3, symptom table (p. 3.2) and the self-test flow of information (Appendix 3A); Section 4, illustrated parts list; Section 5, 15-inch ImageWriter take-apart; Section 6, appendix with configuration and DIP switch functions.[3]
- ImageWriter II Technical Procedures (PDF pp. 110-331): basics, take-apart, troubleshooting, adjustments, additional procedures, the SheetFeeder, and illustrated parts lists for the printer and the SheetFeeder. See Apple ImageWriter II Documentation.
- ImageWriter II/L Technical Procedures (PDF pp. 332-521): basics, take-apart, troubleshooting, adjustments, additional procedures and illustrated parts list, revised to November 1991.[3]
Interface guide (1991)
[edit | edit source]The seventh edition of Apple's Peripheral Interface Guide (Service Technical Procedures, revision January 1991, 072-0213F), 141 PDF pages with a text layer. It gives pin-outs, switch settings and cable part numbers for Apple computers, interface cards and peripherals. The Non-Laser Printers part has the ImageWriter and ImageWriter 15-inch pin-outs (DB-25 male) and the settings of switch banks 1 and 2 (pp. 16-17), and the connection tables give the cable for each computer.[4]
What these documents do not contain
[edit | edit source]The schematic has no separate parts list; component values are marked on the drawing. The ImageWriter Technical Procedures work at module level: apart from the stepper motor resistances in the symptom table, they give no voltage or resistance checks for the CPU PC board.[2][3]
