What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • The Hard Disk 20SC, 40SC, 80SC and 160SC share one external case, mounting frame and power supply (661-0343); the parts list gives every case part, cable and hard disk assembly by number (SCSI Hard Disk Drives, Take-Apart p. 2.2 and IPL.3-IPL.13, PDF pp. 188, 256-266).
  • Replacement mechanisms come with terminating resistor packs that must be removed for external use (Take-Apart p. 2.10, Troubleshooting p. 4.3, PDF pp. 196, 238).
  • The LED on an external SCSI drive is off when the drive is ready; if it stays on, the hard disk assembly is probably bad (Troubleshooting p. 4.3, PDF p. 238).
  • Some 40SC and 80SC drives stop spinning up after a period of use, and some 3.5-inch Quantum 40 MB and 80 MB drives need PROM TA.2 01 (Additional Procedures pp. 6.4-6.8, PDF pp. 249-253).
  • From November 1985 Apple substituted the Apple 3.5 Drive mechanism (661-0345) for the original 800K mechanism (661-0305). In the internal drive of a Macintosh 512K enhanced or Plus, the 3.5 Drive mechanism needs the yellow internal cable and the older mechanism the red one (Disk Drives, Drive Compatibility pp. 1.2-1.3, PDF pp. 135-136).

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

It works at module level. There are no schematics and no component values for any power supply or logic board. The SCSI Interface Card section of the SCSI Hard Disk Drives chapter says only that it has moved to the Apple II Family Cards volume (PDF p. 245).[1]
