[edit | edit source]The manual is in six sections. Page numbers are the manual's own.
- Introduction (p. v)
- Section 1, Theory of operation (pp. 1-1 to 1-16): user interface (keys and LEDs, pp. 1-2 to 1-3); mechanical description; functional block diagram (fig. 1-3); pin assignments for the modified 6502 (fig. 1-4), ANTIC (fig. 1-5), GTIA (fig. 1-6), POKEY (fig. 1-7) and PIA (fig. 1-8); memory and the memory management unit; the RF modulator output specification; the power supply (9 V AC input, 31 VA, each regulator 5 V ±5 % at 1.7 A maximum, p. 1-11); and the SIO, keyboard, controller jack, cartridge, monitor and LED board interfaces (figs. 1-9 to 1-13)
- Section 2, Schematics and silkscreens (p. 2-1): a single page saying the drawings are attached to the front cover
- Section 3, Testing (pp. 3-1 to 3-10): the built-in self test (Memory, Audio Visual, Keyboard, All Tests) and the SALT 2.05 diagnostic cartridge (Color Bar, Any Video, Gray Bar, Display Options, RAM test), with the table that maps each bit in the RAM test's D row to a RAM chip, U1–U9 (p. 3-10)
- Section 4, Symptom checklist (p. 4-1), console and RF shield drawing (fig. 4-1), console disassembly and assembly (p. 4-3), keyboard removal, RF modulator adjustment (61.25 MHz on channel 3), sound adjustment and colour adjustment (p. 4-4)
- Section 5, 1200XL parts list (pp. 5-1 to 5-4): major assemblies, and every part on the main board by location, description and Atari part number
- Section 6, Service bulletins (p. 6-1), followed by five Atari tech tips: no. 12 (16 June 1983, colour burst and video sync), no. 15 (7 June 1983, audio frequency drift, C96 and C97), no. 18 (12 July 1983, OS EPROMs on early machines), no. 18A (29 September 1983, replacing Rev. A OS ROMs with Rev. B for a System Reset key fault; printed twice) and no. 19 (15 August 1983, no picture with Star Raiders, capacitor across U16)
The last pages of the scan are chip outline and pin drawings: IC and transistor outlines with Atari part numbers, the memory management unit's pinout, and the ROM and 64K RAM pinouts.
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- The schematics and board silkscreens. Section 2 says they are attached to the front cover, and they are not in this scan, so the parts list gives component values but not where each part sits in the circuit.
- Any rail voltage other than the regulator output specification, and no ripple limit.
- Any procedure for the external 9 V AC transformer (Atari part CA017964) beyond naming it.
