Atari 7800 General Maintenance

Routine care for the Atari 7800 ProSystem. The console has one board in a two-part case, an external DC adaptor, four push-button tact switches and three electrolytic capacitors.[1][2] Faults and test points are on the Atari 7800 Troubleshooting Guide.
Atari's care instructions
[edit | edit source]The owner's manual asks owners to:[3]
- switch the console off when it is not in use, and turn the power off before inserting or removing a cartridge;
- use only the power adaptor and the TV/game switch box packed with the 7800, because others can damage the console;
- unplug the adaptor from the wall when the console is not in use;
- not lift the console or the controllers by their cables, which can break the insulation inside;
- clean the outside of the console with a soft cloth dampened with water only.
Opening the case
[edit | edit source]- Unplug the adaptor and the RF cable.
- Turn the console over and remove the five screws along the bottom, two at the rear and three at the front.[4]
- Lift off the top case.
- The upper RF shield is held by metal tabs through slots in the board. Twist each tab straight with needle-nose pliers so the shield lifts off.[4]
Power adaptor and power circuit
[edit | edit source]ConsoleMods notes that the original adaptor has a very thin cable that kinks easily and breaks inside. Measure the adaptor's DC output, and flex the cable while measuring; a reading that cuts in and out means a broken lead.[2]
Inside, the power path is J5, the 2200 µF reservoir C62, the MJE210 pass transistor Q10 switched by the 4013 latch U10, and the 7805 regulator VR1 on its heatsink behind the cartridge slot.[1][2] Reference readings from the repair flowchart and the schematic:[5][1]
| Test point | Expected |
|---|---|
| U10 (4013) pin 14 | 5.1 V from zener CR5, with the console off or on |
| U10 pin 3 | Goes low while the power button is pressed |
| Emitter of Q10 (MJE210) | 9 V or more |
| Output of VR1 (7805) | +5 V with the console switched on |
Check the solder joints of the power jack, which ConsoleMods lists with damage and corrosion as a cause of no power.[2]
Console buttons
[edit | edit source]The power, reset, select and pause buttons are 12 × 12 mm single-pole tact switches about 4.5 mm high. A dirty switch shows no continuity, or intermittent continuity, between its legs when pressed. ConsoleMods describes them as standard parts available from electronics distributors.[2]
Cartridge slot
[edit | edit source]Clean the cartridge contacts and the slot when games fail to start. ConsoleMods reports traces under the lower right corner of the cartridge port shroud being worn through by the shroud; look at that area whenever the board is out.[2]
Capacitors
[edit | edit source]The NTSC board has three aluminium electrolytics: C62 (2200 µF) at the power input, C61 (220 µF) on the regulator output and C22 (220 µF) on the +5 V rail.[1] Console5 gives them all as 16 V parts. Values, positions and the procedure are on the Atari 7800 Capacitor Replacement Guide.[6]
Things that are not faults
[edit | edit source]- The screen goes blank after 15 to 30 minutes on pause. Atari built this in to protect the television; press PAUSE again to resume.[3]
- An NTSC 7800 shows no game with a PAL 7800 cartridge, because the NTSC BIOS rejects cartridges without the signature it checks for.[2]
- Some 2600 games, mostly Activision titles, fail on 7800s with the C025233-002 board's timing circuit.[7]
