IBM PS2 Model 80 Technical Reference (April 1987)

From RetroTechCollection

The IBM Personal System/2 Model 80 Technical Reference is IBM's 612-page technical reference for the PS/2 Model 80, First Edition, April 1987. The preface says it covers the 8580-041 and -071. It is a single volume: the Micro Channel architecture, power supply, keyboard, instruction sets and compatibility notes that later editions leave to the Hardware Interface Technical Reference are all in this book.

Contents

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

There are no FRU numbers, removal procedures, symptom-to-FRU index, schematics or component values; the system board appears as block diagrams, register tables and connector tables. Third-party drawings of one Model 80 board are at IBM PS2 Model 80 Schematics.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]

From Section 5 (pp. 5-3 to 5-7):

  • The supply selects its input range automatically: 100-125 V nominal (90-137 V) at 5 A, or 200-240 V (180-265 V) at 3 A, 50-60 Hz ±3 Hz. The input is fused, and ground leakage does not exceed 500 µA.
  • It has three outputs, +5, +12 and −12 V, with minimum sense levels of +4.5, +10.8 and −10.2 V (Figure 5-2).
  • A short on any output, or an internal overvoltage before any output exceeds 130 % of nominal, latches all outputs off. The supply restarts after the fault is removed and the power switch has been off for at least one second; the October 1990 technical references for other models give ten seconds. Outputs track within 50 ms at power-on. The supply runs with no load, with ±25 % regulation and Power Good in either state, and restarts by itself after a mains outage.
  • Power Good sources 100 µA and sinks 1 mA, comes up 100-500 ms after +5 V reaches its sense level, and stays active for at least 10 ms after mains is removed.
  • The 15-pin system board connector (Figure 5-4): +5 V on pins 1, 4, 7, 10 and 13; signal ground on 2, 5, 6, 8, 11 and 14; +12 V on pin 3; −12 V on pin 9; Power Good on pin 12; System Status on pin 15, the line that lights the yellow fixed disk LED under control of bits 6 and 7 of System Control Port A (hex 0092). Two 4-pin connectors feed the fixed disk positions: +12 V on pin 1, ground on 2 and 3, +5 V on pin 4.
