IBM PS2 Model P70 Technical Reference (April 1989)

From RetroTechCollection

The IBM Personal System/2 Model P70 Technical Reference is IBM's hardware and software interface reference for the PS/2 Model P70 (type 8573), the portable Micro Channel machine with a built-in keyboard and gas-plasma display. The scan is the First Edition (April 1989), part number 68X2377, form number S68X-2377-00. The PDF has 98 pages; the printed cover and title page are not in the scan, which opens on the part-number label.

IBM's preface says it "should be used with" the IBM Personal System/2 Hardware Interface Technical Reference and the IBM Personal System/2 and Personal Computer BIOS Interface Technical Reference. Anything common to the PS/2 range (Micro Channel, the standard controllers, keyboard) is described there, and diskette drives, fixed disks and adapters have their own option technical references.

The last eight pages are the IBM Personal System/2 Model P70 Supplement to the BIOS Interface Technical Reference, dated 11 November 1988, to be filed behind that book's "Supplements" tab. It covers system identification, BIOS programming considerations and the P70's video ABIOS functions.

Figures a repairer can use

  • Model and submodel bytes hex F8 and 0B, returned by interrupt hex 15 function C0 (p. 1-2). This edition describes only this system board.
  • System board: 80386, 128 KB ROM, 4 to 8 MB RAM on the board, 64-byte CMOS RAM with a 2 KB extension and battery backup, two Micro Channel connectors (p. 1-3).
  • Physical specifications (Figure 1-5, p. 1-7): 465 mm wide, 126 mm deep, 306.3 mm high; input 90-137 V or 180-264 V AC; maximum current draw 4.0 A (low range) or 2.0 A (high range); heat output 150 W.
  • The plasma display shows 16 grey levels and emulates 64 grey patterns by half-toning (section 4).

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

It is a programming and interface reference. There are no FRU part numbers, no removal procedures, no symptom-to-FRU index and no component values; those are in the P70 HMR and HMS pamphlets. The system board appears as a block diagram and register and connector tables, not a schematic, and the plasma panel and its power circuits are described only as functions.

The later Second Edition (March 1990), in the IBM PS2 Model P70 HITR Supplement, adds the 16 MHz Type 1 system board (submodel hex 50), a memory presence detect section and a POST error-code table, and revises the specification figures.
