ImageWriter II Service Source
The ImageWriter II volume of Apple's Service Source is a 23-page extract of Apple's service manual for the ImageWriter II impact dot-matrix printer: specifications and symptom charts only.[1]
What the file is
[edit | edit source]The General Information page (p. 3) says that the manual "contains only the Specifications, Symptom Charts and the Illustrated Parts List chapter for the ImageWriter LQ", and that the rest of the procedures are a Paperless Printer file in the Service Source Printables folder. The page's figure names the Troubleshooting, Take Apart and Adjustments material as being in that file. The reference to the ImageWriter LQ is Apple's text, repeated from the LQ volume; the specifications and charts that follow are the ImageWriter II's. No illustrated parts list is included: the file ends in the Paper Feed symptom chart on p. 23.[1]

Notes from the symptom charts
[edit | edit source]- Erratic carrier motion with a loud hum: remove the black tube-shaped shipping protection from the carrier shaft.[1]
- Prints correctly for a while and then prints garbage: set DIP switch 2-3 to the correct serial protocol. For no printing or garbled printing, check the cable and DIP switches 2-1 to 2-4.[1]
- Error light blinking: check that the carrier cover and its magnet are in place, try known-good software, and with no option card fitted check that the option card DIP switch is open (off).[1]
- Carriage does not move and the LEDs are off: replace the drive board, then the transformer, then the filter assembly. No carrier movement after take-apart, or a grinding carriage: check for pinched wires to the carrier motor, then replace the fuse on the drive board, then the drive board.[1]
- Several cures refer to the Adjustments chapter, the Additional Procedures document (print head gap, shims) and Troubleshooting Tables 2 and 5, none of which are in this file.[1]
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]No take-apart, adjustment or additional procedures, no illustrated parts list or exploded view, no Apple part numbers, no schematic and no component values. The electrical specification gives 90–132 V AC only. The remaining procedures were in the separate Paperless Printer file.[1]
