Macintosh Centris 610 Centris 650 and Quadra 800 Developer Note
The Developer Note: Macintosh Centris 610, Macintosh Centris 650, and Macintosh Quadra 800 Computers is Apple Developer Technical Publications' description of three 68040 Macintosh models, copyright 1993 and written by Allen Watson. The hosted PDF has 96 pages and no Apple part number; every page carries the footer "Final Draft. Preliminary, Confidential. 1995 Apple Computer, Inc. 3/9/95", so this copy is a 1995 electronic edition of the 1993 note.[1] It covers the Macintosh Centris 610, Macintosh Centris 650 and Macintosh Quadra 800.

What it settles
[edit | edit source]- Power supply capacity: 86 W in the Centris 610, up to 112 W in the Centris 650 and up to 200 W in the Quadra 800. Each of the three slots in the Centris 650 and Quadra 800 provides 15 W; the Centris 610's one slot provides 10 W.[3]
- Power left for internal drives after the logic board and cards: 1.5 A at +5 V and 1.5 A at +12 V (Centris 610); 1.5 A and 2.0 A (Centris 650); 16.0 A and 4.3 A (Quadra 800).[3]
- Centris 610 NuBus card budget: 10 W in total, either +12 V 2.1 W, −12 V 1.8 W and +5 V 6.1 W, or all 10 W at +5 V.[4]
- Processor, RAM and VRAM: Centris 610 MC68LC040 at 20 MHz, 4 MB on board, two SIMM slots, 68 MB maximum; Centris 650 MC68040 or MC68LC040 at 25 MHz, 4 or 8 MB on board, four slots, 132 or 136 MB maximum; Quadra 800 MC68040 at 33 MHz, 8 MB on board, four slots, 136 MB maximum. VRAM is 512 KB, expandable to 1 MB. The MC68LC040 has no FPU and can be replaced by an MC68040 in its socket.[5]
- SCSI termination: the drive at the end of the internal cable carries the terminators, and the logic board terminates the external end automatically when no external device is attached.[6]
What this note does not contain
[edit | edit source]It is a design note for developers. It has no schematics, no component values, no power-supply output ratings per rail or tolerances, no battery information and no take-apart or repair procedures. For those see the Service Source volumes: Macintosh Quadra 610/ Centris 610/WS 60 Service Source, Centris 650/Quadra 650 Service Source and Macintosh Quadra 800/WS 80 Service Source. Apple's text on page 4 contradicts itself about the AC outlet: it first says the outlet is switched with the computer on all three models, then that the Centris 610's is not switched; the Centris 610 description on the same page repeats that its outlet is not switched.[7]
