Macintosh IIvx/IIvi/Performa 600 Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Macintosh IIvx, Macintosh IIvi, Performa 600 Service Source is Apple's 76-page service manual for the Macintosh IIvx, Macintosh IIvi and Macintosh Performa 600, three machines built on the same case and board design. The file is Apple's own PDF (FrameMaker, Acrobat Distiller 2.1), not a scan. Like other Service Source volumes it works at module level: specifications, symptom charts, take-apart and upgrade procedures, battery checks and an exploded view with module part numbers. Page numbers below are the PDF's.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Power: the mains input is 100-120 V AC at 200 W. The 100-240 V AC, 3 A figure belongs to the switched output receptacle for the monitor, not to the input. DC output is 112 W maximum (p. 12).
  • NuBus load: with the machine dead (no fan, no LED), remove the NuBus cards and try again; combined NuBus cards should not draw more than 45 W (p. 17).
  • Battery: set the meter to the 10 V DC range and replace the lithium battery if it reads below 2.8 V (p. 69). The holder has a latch at one end that is prised open with a small flat-blade screwdriver (p. 71).
  • Floppy drives: the machines shipped with either an auto-inject or a manual-inject 1.4 MB drive, and Apple says to replace like for like (p. 38). A stuck disk is ejected by holding the mouse button down at power-on, or with a straightened paper clip in the hole beside the slot (pp. 18-19).
  • Power supply removal needs a firm lift, because the supply plugs straight into the logic board (p. 29).
  • SCSI: the internal hard drive is terminated and the optional internal CD-ROM drive is not (p. 22).
  • Upgrades: Apple's kit turns a IIvx into a Centris 650 (new logic board, EMI shielding gaskets, sealing tape and name labels, pp. 61-65). All three machines could be upgraded to a Power Macintosh 7100/66 or 7100/66AV, with the procedure in the Power Macintosh 7100 manual (p. 66).
  • Exploded-view part numbers (p. 76): logic boards 661-0760 (IIvi), 661-0759 (IIvx), 661-0761 (Performa 600); power supply 661-0758; floppy drive 661-0474 or 661-0121; hard drive 661-0182; CD-ROM drive 661-1646 (AppleCD 300i), 661-0913 (600i), 661-0023 (300); top cover 922-0056; internal chassis 922-0058; bottom case 922-0406; speaker 922-0055; floppy cable 922-0112; hard drive power cable 922-0051; CD data cable 922-0053.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

No schematic, no component values and no parts list below module level. There is no Adjustments chapter, so it gives no power-supply rail voltages, tolerances or adjustment procedure. (The +5 V 4.85-5.15 V and +12 V 11.90-12.75 V figures seen elsewhere come from the Macintosh Plus Service Source and apply to the 128K, 512K and Plus.) The Bulletins/Safety chapter that the procedures refer to for ESD and battery handling is not in this file. Apple does not name the Performa 600CD; its CD-ROM drive is the optional drive the manual covers.
