Macintosh LC 630 and Quadra 630 Developer Note

From RetroTechCollection

The Macintosh LC 630 and Macintosh Quadra 630 Computers Developer Note is Apple's hardware and software reference for the Macintosh LC 630 and Macintosh Quadra 630, published by Apple's Developer Press in 1994. The hosted copy is Apple's own distilled PDF of 127 pages (dated March 1995), with 114 numbered pages plus front matter and colophon. It was written for developers of expansion cards and software, and notes that a version of the LC 630 would be sold in some regions as the Performa 630.[1]

  • Chapter 4, Expansion Features, p. 39: RAM SIMM slot signals, RAM devices and addressing, SIMM mechanical specification; the I/O expansion slot (pin assignments, signals, bus master, incompatible older cards, card design and power); the DVA connector on the video input module
  • Chapter 5, Software Features, p. 61: ROM (machine identification, memory map, video controller, push-button interrupts, ADB and soft power switch, Power Saver); system software (enabler, booting from CD-ROM, Power Saver control panel, video digitiser)
  • Chapter 6, Software for the IDE Hard Disk, p. 67: IDE driver and ATA Manager reference, error codes (p. 100)
  • Appendix, Foldout Drawings, p. 103: expansion card design guide, component height restrictions, assembly guide
  • Index, pp. 111-114

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • The processor clocks: the system bus runs at 33 MHz and the processor internally at 66 MHz; the LC 630's socketed MC68LC040 can be replaced by an MC68040, but an expansion card cannot add an FPU (pp. 2, 12).[1]
  • The display memory: 1 MB of 60 ns DRAM, separate from main memory and not expandable, holding the graphics frame buffer and two video-input buffers; no 24-bit colour; live video only on monitors up to 800 × 600 (pp. 16-17).[1]
  • Power for a card in the I/O expansion slot: 800 mA at +5 V, 20 mA at −5 V and 200 mA at +12 V, 4 W in total (Table 4-6, p. 54).[1]
  • Which PDS cards do not work: accelerators, 68882 FPU cards, cache cards, and cards whose drivers write to 68030-only registers or refuse new machine types; the Apple IIe Card is not supported because the machine runs only in 32-bit mode (p. 10).[1]
  • Soft power: the Cuda IC provides ADB, parameter RAM, the real-time clock and control of the power supply (p. 16).[1]

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]

The note has no service procedures, no symptom charts, no parts list and no schematics. It gives no power supply ratings or rail tolerances beyond the expansion-card budget, and it does not identify the battery. For service, use the LC 630/Quadra 630/ Performa 640 Service Source.[1]
