Macintosh LC II Developer Note
The Macintosh LC II Computer Developer Note is Apple's short hardware and software note for the Macintosh LC II, published by Apple's Developer Technical Publications in 1992. It describes only what is new or different from the Macintosh LC and refers to the Macintosh LC Computer Developer Note (part of APDA's Macintosh IIsi, LC, and Classic Developer Notes, M0991LL/A) for everything else. The hosted copy is Apple's distilled PDF of 18 pages (dated March 1995), with a preface and ten numbered pages.[1]
Contents
[edit | edit source]Page numbers are the document's own.[1]
- Preface: about this note; supplemental reference documents, p. v
- Chapter 1, Macintosh LC II Hardware, p. 1: introduction; major features, p. 2; design differences, p. 4, with a block diagram (Figure 1-1, p. 5); compatibility issues, p. 6 (expansion connector, mathematics coprocessor, p. 7)
- Chapter 2, Macintosh LC II Software, p. 9: the LC II ROM, p. 10; identifying the LC II, p. 10
What it settles
[edit | edit source]- The processor is a 68030 at 15.6672 MHz. The 512 KB ROM is socketed, with optional expansion to 2 MB. The board has 4 MB of RAM soldered on and two SIMM sockets for up to 10 MB (p. 2).[1]
- Video modes: with a 256 KB VRAM SIMM, 512 × 384 in 8-bit colour on the 12-inch RGB monitor and 640 × 480 in 4-bit colour on the 13-inch; with 512 KB, 16-bit on the 12-inch and 8-bit on the 13-inch (p. 3).[1]
- The differences from the LC: 68030 for 68020; 4 MB soldered where the LC has 2 MB; no second floppy connector and no support for additional floppy drives; no phono adapter in the microphone kit; a slightly modified case (p. 4).[1]
- The 96-pin processor-direct slot is physically and electrically the same as the LC's; the budget is 4 W (800 mA at +5 V); FC3 is always high, so expansion cards are always addressed in 32-bit mode (pp. 3, 6).[1]
- The LC II has no FPU, but the V8 gate array decodes a 68882 on an expansion card (p. 7).[1]
- The ROM supports 4 MB of RAM on the board and up to 6 MB of expansion RAM, and shows the desktop during the memory test (p. 10).[1]
- The Gestalt machine type is 19, the same as the LC, under System 7.0, and 37 under System 7.1 (p. 10).[1]
What it does not contain
[edit | edit source]The note has no pinouts or power budget tables of its own (it refers to the LC developer note), and no service procedures, parts list, schematics, power supply or battery data. For service, use the Macintosh LC Series/ Quadra 605 Service Source.[1]
