Macintosh SE Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Macintosh SE Service Source is Apple's 126-page module-level service manual for the Macintosh SE. The PDF was distilled on 13 December 1995 from FrameMaker. Its specifications describe the machine with the 1.4 MB drive, so it covers the Macintosh SE FDHD as well as the 800 KB SE, which it treats in its upgrade and board-identification procedures.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Specifications: 68000 at 7.83 MHz; 1 or 2 MB RAM, expandable to 4 MB; 256 KB ROM; line voltage 90–140 V AC or 170–270 V AC, 47–63 Hz; 100 W maximum; 17–21 lb (pp. 6–13).
  • PRAM battery: replace below 2.8 V, measured on the 10 V DC range with the logic board out (p. 98).
  • Memory: the resistor board (R35 fitted for 1 MB, R36 for 2 MB) and the jumper board, the SIMM positions for 2.5 MB and 4 MB, and the instruction to ignore the "2/4 M" jumper label (pp. 72–78).
  • Exchange logic boards 661-0526 and 661-0536 and how to choose between them (pp. 107–111).
  • The 1.4 MB drive upgrade: SWIM 344-0062 at D8, high ROM 342-0701 at D6, low ROM 342-0702 at D7; System 6.0.3 or later (pp. 89–91).
  • The SE-to-SE/30 logic board upgrade kit, which needs at least four identical SIMMs (pp. 81–82).
  • Video adjustment targets: raster 7 in wide by 4.7 in high; focus fully clockwise then back one-eighth of a turn (pp. 123–124).
  • Module part numbers in the exploded view: analogue board 661-0371, power supply 661-0370, video board 982-0024, logic board 661-0530, CRT and yoke 076-0103, 800 KB drive 661-0345, 1.4 MB drive 661-0474, 40 MB hard disk 661-0216 (p. 126).

These figures are cited on Macintosh SE, Macintosh SE FDHD, Macintosh SE General Maintenance, Macintosh SE Memory Upgrade Guide, Macintosh SE Troubleshooting and Macintosh SE Capacitor Replacement Guide.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No schematics and no component values. The exploded view gives module part numbers only. For the analogue board, see Apple's analogue board drawing File:Classic Analog Board Schematic.pdf (internal title "SE30_Analog_Board"), the BOMARC SE schematic File:Fan, CRT Board.jpg, and the parts lists in Macintosh Repair & Upgrade Secrets.
  • No voltage adjustment and no rail limits. The Adjustments chapter covers the yoke and the video controls only. Apple published the SE supply's output limits in the Guide to the Macintosh Family Hardware (Table 6-15, p. 259).
  • No faulty-SIMM table: the Sad Mac chart refers to "Isolating a Faulty SIMM" in a separate Apple memory manual.

Three slips in the text: the battery warnings (pp. 97, 99) and the external floppy chart (p. 22) say "Macintosh SE/30"; the exploded view prints the logic board number as "6i61-0530"; and the Identifying SE Logic Boards procedure gives 661-0526 and 661-0536, not the exploded view's 661-0530.
