Mapping the Commodore 64

From RetroTechCollection

Mapping the Commodore 64 is a 1984 book by Sheldon Leemon, published by COMPUTE! Publications of Greensboro, North Carolina. ISBN 0-942386-23-X.[1] The Library of Congress record gives the extent as xii, 268 pages (call number QA76.8.C64 L45 1984).[2]

It is a memory map of the Commodore 64 that goes through the address space location by location, from page zero to the Kernal ROM, explaining what each location does and how to use it from BASIC or machine language. Chapter 6 covers the registers of the VIC-II, the SID, the two 6526 CIAs, colour RAM and the character ROM.[3][4] Leemon credits Russ Davies, author of Mapping the VIC, and Dan Heeb for their research, and names Commodore's Commodore 64 Programmer's Reference Guide as his most valuable technical source.[5]

What this book does not contain

[edit | edit source]

It describes the chips by their registers. The one hardware table is in the CIA section: the user port pins, with the RS-232 signals and their DB-25 equivalents.[6] It has no schematics, parts lists or component values; for those use the Commodore 64 / 64C Service Manual.
