Newton Interconnect Port Hardware Specification
The Newton Interconnect Port Hardware Specification for the MessagePad is Apple Computer's 14-page draft specification of the 26-pin InterConnect port on the MessagePad 2000 and 2100, dated 13 August 1997 and marked "Draft. Preliminary".[1]
Contents
[edit | edit source]- Overview of the pin groups (p. 1-1)
- Serial channel 0, through an LTC1323 line driver at RS-422 levels, and serial channel 3, with no line driver (pp. 1-2 to 1-4); the connection to a standard Apple DIN 8 serial cable (Table 1-1)
- Audio out and audio in (pp. 1-4 to 1-5)
- The dock-attach signal for waking the MessagePad and for autodocking (pp. 1-6 to 1-7)
- Power adapter pins (p. 1-7)
- Connector pinout and signal groups (pp. 1-8 to 1-10)
- The JAE mating plug, the switched 5 V supply, and the specification for a MessagePad power adapter (pp. 1-11 to 1-13)
What it settles
[edit | edit source]| Parameter | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Open-circuit voltage | 6.75 to 7.50 V; no more than 7.7 V below 5 mA |
| Source resistance | 0.2 to 0.4 Ω, over 5 to 1300 mA |
| Current limit | 1.1 to 1.3 A |
| Output at 500 mA / 1000 mA / 1300 mA | 7.07–7.50 V / 6.87–7.50 V / 6.75–7.50 V |
| Ripple | 100 mV peak to peak maximum |
| Overvoltage protection | 10.0 V nominal, 12.0 V maximum |
| Drain from the batteries with the adapter unplugged from the mains | 100 µA maximum |
- The adapter's positive feeds pins 2 and 14 and its ground pins 3, 15 and 16. All MessagePads built up to the date of the draft are four-cell devices, so the two-cell input on pin 1 is not connected (p. 1-7).
- The dock 5 V supply on pin 11 is 4.5 to 5.5 V and may supply 100 mA, out of a 500 mA 5 V budget shared with the PC Cards. It is on only while a serial channel is active or audio is playing or recording (p. 1-11).
- The mating plug is a JAE part: RX04-26P-SF1 locking or RX04-26P1-SF1 non-locking (p. 1-11).
| Signal | HSKo | HSKi | TXD− | Gnd | RXD− | TXD+ | GPI | RXD+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| InterConnect pin | 19 | 20 | 18 | 23 | 8 | 6 | 7 | 21 |
| DIN 8 pin | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
What this document does not contain
[edit | edit source]It is a draft: one figure is labelled "update typical curve". It is written for the MessagePad and does not mention the eMate 300. It gives no mechanical drawing of the socket and no circuit for the Newton Serial Adapter itself.[1]
