Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) Service Source
The Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) Service Source is Apple's 127-page service manual for the last Power Mac G4 tower, identified by its top-mounted speaker and mirrored optical drive bezels (© 2002 Apple Computer). It has three chapters: Take Apart, Troubleshooting and Views. It is module-level, with no schematics or component values. Page numbers below are PDF pages.

- Apple's text says the board needs a +5 V trickle supply, but its verification step measures about +12 V between pins 12 and 24 with the machine plugged in and off, then +3.3 V at pin 6, +5 V at pin 3 and +12 V at pin 10 with it running (pp. 107–108).
- DDR memory: PC2100 (DDR266) DIMMs for 133 MHz machines and PC2700 (DDR333) for 167 MHz machines; 2.5 V, 184-pin, unbuffered, no taller than 1.3 inches. PC2100 memory in a 167 MHz machine stops it booting, with a single tone in place of the chime and a flashing front LED (p. 103).
- The rear carrier takes the 100 MHz ATA cable and the front carrier the 66 MHz cable; Apple warns not to swap them (p. 104).
- Multiple bus-powered FireWire devices plus an Apple ADC 17-inch CRT display can exceed the power supply's capacity and shut the system down (p. 112).
- The PMU reset, battery check (3.3 to 3.7 V) and beep codes follow the other G4 towers (pp. 106, 108, 113).
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- No schematics, parts lists or component values; no part numbers on the exploded view.
- Nothing on repairing the power supply itself. Apple's take-apart page treats it as a module and warns against opening it (p. 46). Community repair notes for the supply are on Power Mac G4 Troubleshooting.
