Programming the Commodore 64

From RetroTechCollection

Programming the Commodore 64: The Definitive Guide is a book by Raeto Collin West, first published in April 1985 by Level Ltd (Computer Publications) of Hampstead, London. The title page of the hosted scan carries the imprint of COMPUTE! Publications of Greensboro, North Carolina; the copyright page gives Level Ltd as publisher and the Level ISBN, 0-9507650-2-3.[1] The numbered pages run to 611; Level's own order form at the back of the book gives "624 pages".[2]

It is a single-volume reference to the Commodore 64: BASIC (with a keyword dictionary and error messages), the machine's architecture, advanced BASIC, 6510 machine language, Kernal and BASIC ROM routines, a ROM guide and memory map, graphics and the VIC-II, sound and the SID, tape and disk storage, the control ports and peripherals. The appendices include Supermon 64 and fast disk and tape loaders.[3] It has some hardware material: the expansion port pin assignments with a description of each line (Figure 5-5), notes on the C2N cassette unit and on the 1540/1541 drives, and a section on recovering from lock-ups, including a CIA fault in early 64s.[4]
