  • Chapter 3 lists tools and test equipment and covers high-voltage hazards and a CRT discharge procedure (pp. 70-76).[3] For Apple's own procedure see CRT Discharge Procedure.
  • Chapter 4 describes the startup sequence and error chords and decodes Sad Mac codes, with sections on the SE and II ROMs and the Portable ROMs (pp. 83-104). See also Sad Mac Error Codes.[3]
  • Chapter 6 explains switch-mode supply operation stage by stage, then gives a way to check the supply rails without opening the case: on machines with an external floppy port, measure pins 5 (-12 V), 6 (+5 V) and 7-8 (+12 V) of the DB-19 connector against ground on pins 1-4 (Table 6-3). High allows 5 to 10 per cent either side of nominal and prefers readings within 5 per cent. He names the adjustment potentiometers: RV-171-REGADJ on the II, IIx and IIfx, VADJ on the SE and SE/30, "voltage" on the Plus, and unmarked on the Classic and Classic II.[4]
  • Chapter 8 covers dead ADB ports: the Tokin D16-C RF choke filter (usually L1) behind the ADB ports and the 1 A pico fuse (usually F1) on newer machines, how to test and bypass them, and a table of high-failure parts, for example R14 (470 Ω), R15 (1 kΩ) and Q1 (2N3904) on the Macintosh SE.[5]
  • Chapter 10 identifies the NCR SCSI controller used in each family and the 1 A pico fuse on the SCSI termination-power line of the SE/30, Macintosh II family and later machines (F2 on the Macintosh II).[6]
  • Chapter 11 includes LocalTalk faults, including networks longer than the 300-metre maximum.[7]
  • Chapter 13 is a symptom-and-solution guide arranged by model family: the compact Macs, the modular Macintosh II family with the LC and LC II, and the IIcx, IIci, IIsi and Quadra 700.[3]
