Acorn 32016 Second Processor Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

Acorn's 32016 Second Processor documentation hosted here is the owner's guide for the later Cambridge Co-Processor and the leaflet for the original 256 KB unit. Both describe the Acorn 32016 Second Processor. No Acorn service manual or circuit diagram for the 32016 second processor board (0210,000) has been found online; Acorn's service manual for the Cambridge Workstation covers that machine's own 4 MB 32016 board and is on Chris's Acorns.[1]

User guide

[edit | edit source]

The Cambridge Co-Processor User Guide was published by Acorn Scientific, issue 1, July 1985 (part number printed on the title page as 040,000; ISBN 0 907876 35 8). The hosted scan has 62 pages and a text layer.

Contents (printed pages)
Part Subjects Pages
Part I, the hardware and firmware Installing the hardware: ROMs needed (DNFS, ADFS/32, OS 1.2 or later), ROMs for the B+, connecting the co-processor; starting up; Pandora 3 to 10
Part II, Panos Copying the distribution discs; starting Panos; installing on DFS, ADFS and NFS; configuring 11 to 26
Part III, bundled languages 32000 BBC BASIC, ISO Pascal, FORTRAN 77, C, Cambridge LISP, 32000 Assembler 27 to 48
Appendix A Fitting a ROM 49
Appendix B Trouble-shooting: hardware difficulties, Panos installation, languages 51, 52

What it settles: the hardware summary (NS32016 CPU, 512 KB of RAM expandable to 1 MB, NS32081 floating point unit, 16 KB of Pandora ROM, p. 5); the ROM and operating system requirements, including the special ADFS for Winchester users and OS 1.2 or later (p. 6); the placing of the unit immediately to the right of the BBC Micro because of the short Tube cable (p. 7); the start-up banner (p. 9); and the five visible signs of a hardware fault (p. 51).

It does not contain any circuit description, power supply data or service procedure.

Leaflet APP 31

[edit | edit source]

Acorn's leaflet "The British Broadcasting Corporation Microcomputer 32016 Second Processor", reference APP 31, is a 6-page scan with a text layer. Its technical data section gives the 256 KB UK version (sales order code ANC05), with 32 × 64 Kbit DRAMs of 150 ns, 32 KB of ROM in two 128 Kbit devices, a 6 MHz clock, a four-layer board powered from a "15W, 3A, 5V two rail power supply with overvoltage and short circuit protection" and no fan, a 240 V 50 Hz input with a 3 A plug fuse, a case of 346 × 207 × 75 mm maximum and a weight of 2.1 kg. It lists the BBC Micro Model B with MOS 1.2 or later as the prerequisite.
