Apple IIe Enhancement Kit

From RetroTechCollection

The Apple IIe Enhancement Kit: Dealer's Installation Instructions is Apple Computer's six-page dealer sheet, part number 030-1142-B, for fitting the Apple IIe Enhancement Kit. The kit converts an Apple IIe into an Enhanced IIe by replacing four chips on the main logic board. Apple describes it as giving the IIe many features of the Apple IIc, including faster processing, MouseText and support of interrupts for applications such as networking.

Installation procedure

[edit | edit source]

Apple's steps, in order:

  1. Turn off the power switch but leave the computer plugged in.
  2. Remove the cover and check that the small red light inside the case is off.
  3. Touch the power supply case to discharge static.
  4. Locate the four chips (Figure 1 or 2); remove interface cards if needed.
  5. Rock the chips out gently with a small flat-blade screwdriver or an IC extractor, a little at each end at a time. Apple warns that "it is very easy to accidentally pull up the socket along with the 6502".
  6. Embed the old chips' feet in the antistatic foam the new ones came in, label them and put them away.
  7. Identify the new chips from Table 1.
  8. Fit each chip with its notch towards the keyboard, aligning all the pins before pressing down evenly.
  9. Refit the cards and cover, switch on and run a program to check the machine.
  10. Give the customer About Your Enhanced Apple IIe: User's Guide.

The sheet ends by warning that some programs written for the IIe may display MouseText characters instead of highlighted upper-case characters on the enhanced machine.

What this document does not contain

[edit | edit source]

It does not mention board revisions. Apple's Apple IIe Technical Procedures (File:Apple IIe Technical Procedures.pdf, Section 0, p. 0.6) adds that a Rev. A unenhanced logic board must be upgraded to a Rev. B unenhanced board before the kit is installed, and gives Apple's own version of the procedure (Section 4, pp. 4.2-4.4). That section prints the new ROM numbers as 341-0304 and 341-0303; this sheet and the Technical Procedures' own parts list give 342-0304 and 342-0303. The sheet does not describe the firmware changes; see Apple IIe Enhanced.
