Apple IIe Reference Manual

From RetroTechCollection

The Apple II Reference Manual, For //e Only is Apple Computer's hardware and firmware reference for the Apple IIe, written by Allen Watson of the Apple PCSD Publications Department, copyright 1982. It is reorder product A2L2005, and the back cover carries 030-0357B. The hosted scan has 284 pages and a text layer.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Table 7-2 (p. 136): line voltage 107 to 132 V AC; 60 W continuous and 80 W intermittent, where intermittent means up to twenty minutes at the higher load followed by at least ten minutes at normal load; supply voltages +5 V ±3%, +11.8 V ±6%, −5.2 V ±10%, −12 V ±10%; maximum currents +5 V 2.5 A, +12 V 1.5 A continuous and 2.5 A intermittent, −5 V 250 mA, −12 V 250 mA; maximum case temperature 55 °C.
  • Operating the IIe from a source above 140 V damages the supply.
  • The supply turns off all four outputs if an output is shorted to ground, the supply cable is disconnected, or an output leaves its normal range, and retries about every half second until the fault clears.
  • The CPU is a 6502B running at 1 MHz.
  • The single-wire shift-key modification is made by soldering across the broken circle marked X6; the manual says early boards whose part number ends in A have it already, and warns that closing a hand-control switch while SHIFT is held short-circuits and shuts the supply down.
  • Early boards whose part number ends in -A lack the sync and colour reference signals on slot 7.
  • Each analogue hand-control input takes a variable resistance of up to 150K ohms to +5 V.

Apple's IIc Technical Reference Manual also gives per-rail tolerances, for the IIc's internal converter; the 1979 Apple II Reference Manual does not.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

There are no take-apart procedures, parts lists, part numbers or fault-finding charts, and the schematic in Figures 7-14a to 7-14d is reproduced too small to read component values in this scan. It predates the enhanced IIe and the Platinum IIe. Apple's service procedures, board identification chart and parts list are in the Apple IIe Technical Procedures (File:Apple IIe Technical Procedures.pdf), which also gives a different account of which boards have the shift-key modification made.
