The Atari TTM194 is a 19-inch fixed-frequency monochrome monitor for the Atari TT030's 1280 × 960 high-resolution mode. Atari's owner's manual describes it as an ECL high-resolution monitor for use with all Atari TT computers.[2] atari-computermuseum.de records that it was made by Moniterm and shown at CeBIT in March 1990, and that Atari sold it alongside the TTM195, a Philips-built equivalent.[1] The monitor contains a CRT and a mains power supply; read CRT Discharge Procedure before opening it.
History
[edit | edit source]The TT030's 1280 × 960 mode drives only an ECL monochrome monitor; VGA-type colour monitors use the same connector for the lower-resolution modes.[3] Atari showed the TTM194 at CeBIT in Hannover on 21 March 1990, and the TTM195 at the Fall COMDEX in Las Vegas on 12 November 1990. atari-computermuseum.de says the two were sold in parallel, the TTM194 mainly in the United States and the TTM195, made by Philips Korea and based on the Philips M19P114P/7103, mainly in Europe, though both turned up in both markets. It gives the TTM194's German price in December 1990 as DM 2,198 and the TTM195's US price in November 1990 as $995, and dates the end of production to about 1993.[1] Atari's August 1991 data sheet covers the two models together as the "TTM 194/195".[4] The TT030 field service manual names the TTM195 as the monochrome monitor for its test set-up.[3]
atari-computermuseum.de describes both monitors as technically close to the earlier Atari SM194, a Moniterm 19-inch monitor of 1989 for the TT030, and for the Mega ST and Mega STE with a graphics card.[1]

The two documents disagree on the mains range, the controls, the size and the weight. The owner's manual is the European (UK) edition for the TTM194 alone; the data sheet covers the TTM194 and TTM195 together, and atari-computermuseum.de lists the scan rates as 71.911 kHz and 71.624 Hz with a video bandwidth of 128.85 MHz.[2][4][1]
Connecting
[edit | edit source]Switch everything off, connect the monitor's signal cable (9-pin D-sub) to the TT's 15-pin monitor connector, then connect the mains. Switch the monitor on first and the TT second.[2] The UK edition of the manual asks for a 3 A fuse in a BS1363 plug, or a 3 A or 5 A fuse with any other plug.[2]
| Monitor 9-pin (female) | Signal | TT 15-pin HD (male) | TT030 pin function |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ECL video | 4 | High resolution monochrome out + |
| 2 | ECL video return (ground) | 5 | Ground |
| 3 | H sync | 13 | Hsync |
| 4 | V sync | 14 | Vsync |
| 5 | Not connected | ||
| 6 | XECL (inverted) video | 15 | High resolution monochrome out - |
| 7 | XECL video return (ground) | 10 | Ground |
| 8 | Sync return (ground) | 10 | Ground |
| 9 | Monitor detect (ground) | 9 | Monochrome detect |
The manual specifies twisted pairs: 1-2 and 6-7 at 75 Ω (28 AWG), 3-8 and 4-9 at 100 Ω.[2] Pin 9 is grounded in the monitor, and the TT reads it on the MFP's XMONO input to know that a monochrome monitor is connected.[2][3]
Faults and repair
[edit | edit source]| Symptom | Cause and action |
|---|---|
| Monochrome monitor does not sync, although a colour monitor works on the same TT | Atari's TT030 symptom checklist: check that the monochrome detect line is not open with the monitor connected, check the connection at the monitor connector, check the MFP's XMONO pin, and replace the MFP.[3] Check the cable continuity against the table above, especially 9-pin pin 9 to 15-pin pin 9. |
| Image too dark or washed out | Set the brightness and contrast controls at the front.[2] |
| Occasional snapping on switching on or off | Normal according to Atari. Continuous or frequent snapping or popping while running needs service.[2] |
No TTM194 service manual or schematic is held by the Internet Archive; its only TTM194 document is the owner's manual. The nearest circuit-level document is the February 1991 technical manual for the Atari SM194, which describes Moniterm's VCX series of monitors, buildable for any horizontal rate from 32 to 128 kHz. Its power consumption (64 W), video rise and fall time (3.5 ns) and horizontal scan delay (0-4 µs) match the TTM194 owner's manual. Its inrush figures (40 A at 120 V, 60 A at 220 V) differ from the TTM194's 40 A at 240 V, and its values are given for the SM194's 66 kHz timing, so use it as a guide to the TTM194, not as its service manual.[5][2]
A 2001 post on the classiccmp mailing list from someone who had repaired a batch of surplus Moniterm 19-inch monitors reported that most needed their first-stage video amplifier transistors replaced and a general alignment, and that those monitors set their fixed scan frequency with DIP switches.[6] The post is about Moniterm 19-inch monitors in general, not the TTM194 in particular.
