IBM 3270 PC Maintenance Information
The IBM 3270 Personal Computer Maintenance Information is IBM's field service manual for the IBM 3270 PC (machine type 5271), order number SY27-2567-2, third edition, October 1984. The scan has 721 pages. It is written for IBM customer engineers and isolates faults to the field-replaceable unit (FRU).
Contents

Some details the manual settles:
- The safety checklist says a pop rivet or a bristle screw prevents access to the inside of the system unit power supply, that the inside of the monitor is not to be accessed by service personnel, and that the ground pin to frame resistance must be below 0.1 ohm (pp. xvii to xviii).
- The system board diagram (p. 4-100-2) shows expansion slots J1 to J8, the keyboard connector J9, power connectors P8 and P9, speaker output P3, the 8088, the coprocessor socket, ROM, the configuration DIP switch and the colour trimmer capacitor.
- The power supply check gives the system board connector limits: +4.8 to +5.2 V, +11.5 to +12.6 V, and 4.5 to 5.4 V and 10.8 to 12.9 V on the negative rails (p. 3-9999-13), with Power Good at 2.4 to 5.2 V (p. 3-9999-12).
- The DFCA chart ends with a resistance check at the system unit coaxial connector, which should read less than 1 ohm with the cable removed (p. 3-2800-10).
- The parts catalogue lists the 5271 system board (256 KB) as 8529254, the power supplies as 6347754 (120 V) and 6347755 (240 V), the speaker as 8529143, the keyboard adapter cable as 8654377 and the US keyboard as 6110344 (pp. 7-7 and 7-27).
- The 5151 Monochrome Display is broken down to its cards, transformer and fuse (0.75 A for 120 V, 0.5 A for 220/240 V). The 5272 Color Display is listed only as a complete display assembly, with one part number per region (p. 7-15).
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]There are no schematics and no component values. The manual works at FRU level throughout, and the 5272 Color Display has no internal parts listed at all.
