IBM Personal Computer Family Service Information Manual

From RetroTechCollection

The IBM Personal Computer Family Service Information Manual (SIM), form number SA38-0037-00, First Edition (January 1989), is IBM's one-volume collection of "the most frequently used service-related maintenance and reference information" for its pre-PS/2 personal computers. It obsoletes SR28-0280-02. The scan also contains Technical Newsletter SN27-0786-00 of 21 July 1989, which replaced pages 4-15/16, 17-1 to 17-4, 18-27/28 and 18-47/48. The PDF has 384 pages.

IBM's preface says the SIM "is not required to service the Personal Computer family of products" and was made available as a convenience. It was ordered as Bill of Forms 2481, together with the Advanced Diagnostic diskettes for the 5150, 5155 and 5160 (version 2.25, SA38-0033) and for the 5162 and 5170 (version 2.07, SA38-0034), the service summary cards (SA38-0035, SA38-0036), a printer supplement (SA38-0040), tabs and binder.

Figures a repairer can use

[edit | edit source]
  • 5160 power supply (p. 6-2): a 130 W switching supply giving 15 A at +5 V (±5 %), 4.2 A at +12 V (±5 %), 300 mA at -5 V (±10 %) and 250 mA at -12 V (±10 %), with overvoltage and overcurrent shutdown; 120 V and 220/240 V versions, both fused. The system board takes about 2 to 4 A of +5 V, leaving about 11 A for adapters. +12 V is intended for the internal diskette drive and 10 MB fixed disk, and -5 V for the diskette adapter's phase-locked loop.
  • 5160 model chart (p. 6-2): the PC/370-P, PC/370-M and PC/3277-EM cards appear only in Models 568, 588 and 589, the XT/370.
  • XT/370 (p. 6-17): a 5160 with 256 KB on the system board, the PC/370-P processor card in slot 4 and the 512 KB PC/370-M memory card in slot 3; older units may have a PC/3277EM card for 3277-2 emulation.
  • 3270 PC family (chapter 10): the 5371 system unit is based on a 5160; the 5278 display attachment unit takes its power from the 5279 display, and the 5379 display from the 5378 unit. The parts catalogue states that all base system parts for the 3270 XT products are the same as 5160 XT base parts.
  • ECA037 (chapter 19): a plug adapter kit that cures connector incompatibility when replacement CRT/yoke assemblies and amplifier cards are fitted to the 5379 Model C01 display.
