IBM PC XT Technical Reference (First Edition)
The IBM Personal Computer XT Hardware Reference Library: Technical Reference, part number 1502237, is IBM's technical reference for the IBM Personal Computer XT (5160), dated April 1983, the month after the XT was introduced. Its edition notice reads "Revised Edition (April 1983)". The scan has 628 pages and a text layer from OCR.
Unlike the 1986 edition, it is a single volume that documents the options IBM sold for the XT alongside the system unit.

What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]It predates the 256-640KB system board and the 1986 BIOS revisions, so it documents only the original 64-256KB board and the 1982 BIOS. It is a design reference, not a service manual: there are no removal procedures, FRU part numbers or symptom-to-FRU index. The logic diagrams have designators but there is no bill of materials, and there is no circuit diagram of the power supply.
What it settles
[edit | edit source]The system unit section (from p. 1-3) describes the original board: 128 KB to 256 KB of parity-checked RAM in 64K × 1 dynamic chips (200 ns access), and ROM in two 28-pin sockets, one 32 KB and one 8 KB, holding the POST, BIOS, character patterns and bootstrap loader, with BASIC. Appendix G gives IBM's switch settings for this configuration.
