IBM PC XT 5155 5160 Technical Reference (March 1986)

From RetroTechCollection

The IBM Personal Computer Hardware Reference Library: Technical Reference, "Revised Edition (March 1986)", is IBM's technical reference for the IBM Personal Computer XT (5160) and the IBM Portable Personal Computer (5155). The cover and the reader's comment form print part number 6139821; the scan's file metadata gives 6280089. The scan has 422 pages and a text layer.

It is the system manual of a two-part set. The options and adapters (display adapters, diskette and fixed disk adapters, communications cards and so on) are in a separate Technical Reference Options and Adapters manual, which this edition refers to but does not contain.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

It is a design reference, not a service manual. It has no removal procedures, no FRU part numbers and no symptom-to-FRU index; those are in IBM's Hardware Maintenance Service manuals. It does not cover the adapter cards, which are in the separate Options and Adapters manual. The logic diagrams show component designators, and the power sheets give filter capacitor values, but there is no bill of materials. There is no circuit diagram of either power supply; Section 3 gives specifications and connector pin assignments only.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • The XT supply's output ratings: 15 A at +5 V, 4.2 A at +12 V, 0.3 A at −5 V and 0.25 A at −12 V, with the minimum loads, regulation tolerances, sense levels, 5.0 A and 3.5 A fuses and the 100–500 ms power good delay (pp. 3-3 to 3-5). Some online tables give 0.3 A for −12 V.
  • The system board filter capacitors on each rail, including C56 (+12 V), C58 (−12 V) and C68 (−5 V), on sheet 10 of the 64/256K diagrams (p. 1-44) and the matching 256/640K sheet (p. 1-56).
  • The slot J8 "card selected" requirement (p. 1-3) and the SW1 bit assignments, including "Loop on POST" (p. 1-27).
  • IBM's system unit dimensions, weight and environment (pp. 1-29 to 1-30), which differ slightly from those in IBM's 1989 service information manual.
