IBM PS2 and PS ValuePoint Subsystems (December 1992)

From RetroTechCollection

IBM PS/2 and PS/ValuePoint Subsystems is an IBM International Technical Support Center (Boca Raton) Redbook, document number GG24-4002-00, First Edition (December 1992). It applies to the PS/2 and PS/ValuePoint models as of December 1992. The abstract gives 147 pages; the PDF has 174. IBM describes it as intended "for IBM customers and systems engineers who need an understanding of the various hardware subsystems found in PS/2 and PS/ValuePoint systems". It is not a service manual.

Useful to a repairer

[edit | edit source]
  • Terminator positioning (2.3.3): the SCSI bus needs a terminator at each end. IBM names three kinds: internal terminators that come with each device (not to be mixed), a subsystem terminator on some IBM SCSI adapters (a small orange part, to be removed with a chip puller), and an external terminator on the last external device.
  • SCSI security (2.7) describes a data-security exposure: an external SCSI controller attached to the external port can read or write the internal disks even when a power-on password is set. IBM's remedy is physical control of access and, on some PS/2 models, secure I/O cables (8.3.4).
  • POST error codes (Appendix C).
