IBM PS2 SCSI-A Technical Reference

From RetroTechCollection

The Personal System/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter Technical Reference is IBM's programming and interface reference for the PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter. The scan is the First Edition (March 1990), part number 68X2397, form number S68X-2397-00. The PDF has 96 pages; the printed pages run to 80 plus an index.

IBM's description (p. 1): the adapter connects Micro Channel systems to SCSI devices; it supports up to seven SCSI physical devices with eight logical devices each, overlapped command processing for up to 15 devices, up to 5 million bytes per second to external devices and an 8.3 million bytes per second burst rate to the system, a 16-bit data bus and a 24- or 32-bit address bus, and it acts as a bus master.

Figures a repairer can use

[edit | edit source]
  • Device requirements for POST support (p. 7): every device must answer Inquiry and Request Sense within 3 seconds of power-on; a type 0 (disk) device must answer Start/Stop Unit and Test Unit Ready within 3 seconds, must answer Read and Read Capacity, and, if its media is not removable, must be ready within 30 seconds of a Start Unit command. POST sends Inquiry to all 56 PUN/LUN combinations until 15 logical devices are assigned, so a device must respond on every LUN of its SCSI ID.
  • Statement of conformance (p. 5): single-ended drivers and receivers, "+ Terminal Power" supplied by the adapter, parity on all transfers, SCSI conformance level 2, synchronous transfer supported with a minimum transfer period of 200 ns.
  • Connectors (pp. 77-80): the internal connector is a keyed 2 × 25-pin edge connector on the top edge of the card; the external connector is 60-pin, with pins 1-50 matching the SCSI standard, pin 51 usable as ground and pins 52-60 reserved. + Terminal Power is on pin 26 of both.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

It is a programming reference. There are no FRU numbers, removal procedures, schematic or component values, and nothing on terminators or cabling beyond the connector pin assignments.
