Macintosh IIvx IIvi and Performa 600 Developer Note

From RetroTechCollection

The Developer Note: Macintosh IIvx ("also includes Macintosh IIvi and Performa 600") is Apple's hardware and software description of the Macintosh IIvx, Macintosh IIvi and Performa 600 for developers, published by Apple Developer Technical Publications, © 1992. The hosted file is a 52-page PDF; its page footers read "Draft. Preliminary. Confidential." with a 14 March 1995 date from the reissue. Unless it says otherwise, its specifications apply to all three machines.

Printed page n of chapter 1 is PDF page n + 10; the page numbers below are printed ones.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Power supply ratings (Table 1-12, p. 28): +5 V 1.5-15 A, +5 V trickle 1 mA, +12 V 200 mA to 2.5 A (6 A peak for up to 12 seconds), -12 V up to 600 mA; 112 W maximum, 130 W peak. The supply adapts automatically to 85-270 V AC, has an 80 mm fan and a 3 A switched monitor outlet. The trickle output is live whenever the machine is plugged in.
  • Power budgets: NuBus 13.9 W per slot, 41.7 W in total (p. 2); accelerator slot 5 W, 1 A at +5 V, with a warning that more can damage the computer (p. 25); internal drives in Table 1-13 (p. 32).
  • Processor clocks: 31.3344 MHz for the IIvx and Performa 600, 15.6672 MHz for the IIvi. Only the IIvx has the 32K cache and a standard FPU; the IIvi and Performa 600 have an FPU socket (pp. 2-3).
  • Memory: 4 MB soldered (eight 1M × 4 DRAMs); all four SIMM sockets filled with identical 80 ns SIMMs of 256K to 16 MB; VRAM in identical pairs of 256K or 512K SIMMs, 100 ns (pp. 9-10).
  • The accelerator slot is not a processor-direct slot; PDS cards for other Macintosh models may damage the machine (p. 4).
  • SCSI: the logic board's active terminator ends the internal bus when nothing is attached externally; the 3.5-inch drive must be terminated and a 5.25-inch device must not be; the internal CD-ROM is SCSI ID 3 (pp. 4-5, 31-32).
  • Gestalt IDs: IIvx 48, Performa 600 45, IIvi 44. The IIvx shipped with System 7.1 and needs System Enabler 001 (p. 35).

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]

There are no schematics, no parts list, no capacitor or battery values, no rail tolerances and no service procedures. For take-apart, symptom charts and part numbers see Macintosh IIvx/IIvi/Performa 600 Service Source.
