OS 8.1 Emergency Handbook 1998
The Mac OS 8.1 Emergency Handbook is Apple Computer, Inc.'s owner-level troubleshooting booklet for Mac OS 8.1, © 1998. Its cover subtitle is "Includes troubleshooting, hard disk repair, and software installation information". The printed booklet runs to iv + 63 pages; the scan has 69 PDF pages and a text layer, which is poor in places.[1]
Chapter 1 lists start-up symptoms, each followed by an ordered list of solutions with page references, and then describes each solution. The hardware steps in it (reseating memory and expansion cards, replacing the backup battery) are the same first checks a repairer makes.[1]

Two notes in the booklet are useful when judging a machine on the bench. Start-up can take several minutes on a computer with a large amount of RAM, because the RAM is tested first; this is not a freeze. And Apple's sign of a failing backup battery is intermittent start-up problems with the date reset to 1956, for which the booklet sends the owner to an Apple-authorised service provider.[1]
What the booklet does not contain
[edit | edit source]It gives no battery type, voltage or part number, no chime or Sad Mac code table, and no disassembly, schematics or measurements. For battery details see the machine's own Service Source and Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage; for Sad Mac codes see Sad Mac Error Codes.
