Sega Saturn (Model 1) Capacitor Replacement Guide

From RetroTechCollection
Sega Saturn VA0 PAL main board parts location
Sega's circuit board diagram for the 837-11493 VA0 PAL main board. The CE numbers are mostly electrolytics; CE45 and CE46 are the two leaded cans beside the FUSE position at the lower left.

The early Sega Saturn main boards (VA0, VA0.5 and VA1) use surface-mount aluminium electrolytics. Their positions and values are listed below by board revision, followed by the power supply and CD-ROM boards, which are separate assemblies with their own designators. Later boards with through-hole electrolytics are on the Sega Saturn (Model 2) Capacitor Replacement Guide.

Capacitor numbering

[edit | edit source]

On the main board Sega numbers most aluminium electrolytics in a CE series and the ceramic chip capacitors in a C series, as on the Model 2 Mega Drive.[1] The prefix is not a reliable guide to the part type, though. In Sega's VA0 list CE1, CE2 and CE4 are 1 µF ceramic chips and CE32 is a 10 µF tantalum chip, while on the SH-1 board the one electrolytic is C121. Sega's part numbers settle it: 150- is an aluminium electrolytic, 151- a ceramic and 153- a tantalum.[1]

Which board do you have?

[edit | edit source]

Read the board's silkscreen, which carries an 837- assembly number and a 171- PCB number, for example "837-11493 IC BD SATURN MAIN VA0 PAL" and "171-6963B" on Sega's VA0 PAL drawing.[2]

The case does not reliably tell you which board is inside: according to Japanese Wikipedia, early HST-3220 (Model 2) consoles are internally almost the same as the HST-3210.[4] If the board is a through-hole revision, use the Model 2 page whichever case it came in.

Beyond the main board there are three further assemblies with their own capacitors: the power supply unit, which is a bought-in module and varies by manufacturer and by mains voltage; the CD-ROM board, which likewise came from several suppliers; and the small SH-1 board (838-10834) of the earliest machines, whose only electrolytic is C121, 47 µF 6.3 V (Sega part 150-0501); C108 and C122 are not fitted.[1][3]

The power supply

[edit | edit source]

The Saturn runs from the mains; the PAL MK-80200-50 is rated AC 220-240 V, 50/60 Hz, about 20 W.[5] Sega lists the supply only as a complete unit (400-5271 or 400-5272).[1]

Warning: the supply board carries mains voltage, and its primary reservoir capacitor (22 to 56 µF, 400 V, on 220-240 V units) can stay charged after unplugging.[3] Unplug the lead, then measure across that capacitor and discharge it through a resistor until it reads near zero before working on the board.

The supply feeds the main board with three rails, as Sega's block diagram labels them:[6]

Rail Use on Sega's block diagram
+9 V CD drive, and the PLL
+5 V All chips other than the SDRAM
+3.3 V SDRAM

Main board lists

The NTSC VA0, VA0.5 and VA1 lists are Console5's, read from boards.[3] The PAL VA0 list is Sega's, and Console5's list for the same board agrees with it position for position, including CE30 and CE54.[1][3]

VA0 PAL (837-11493), from Sega's parts list

[edit | edit source]

Sega lists up to four interchangeable chip electrolytics for most positions (series codes MV, ECEV, UWX and REV); the first part number is given here. "Chip" means a surface-mount "CAP E CP" part.[1]

CE5, CE7 to CE14, CE17, CE36, CE39 to CE41, CE43, CE44 and CE51 are not in Sega's VA0 PAL list. Leave CE1, CE2, CE4 and CE32 out of a recap; they are not aluminium electrolytics.

VA0.5 (837-11076-02)

[edit | edit source]

A hobbyist's traced VA0.5 schematic carries 837-11076-02 and PCB 171-6874E.[7] Console5's heading for this list also gives 837-11493, the number Sega's PAL manual uses for the VA0 PAL board; on an 837-11493 board use Sega's VA0 PAL list above, which has CE54 and no CE55.[2][1][3]

Doing the work

[edit | edit source]
  1. Unplug the mains lead. Remove the six top-case screws and the top case, the CD compartment lid, the CD drive, the shield plate and the SH-1 board, then the four screws holding the CD drive supports and the five holding the main board. The power, power indicator and R.SW boards come out on three, one and two screws.[9]
  2. Lift the surface-mount electrolytics with hot air or two irons. Do not lever them off.
  3. Wash every footprint with isopropyl alcohol and inspect under magnification. Electrolyte left under an adjacent part keeps corroding after the capacitor is removed; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.
  4. Fit 105 °C low-ESR parts at the original value, or the original value with a higher voltage rating. Stripe to the negative end.
  5. Leave the CD drive's variable resistors alone. Sega says the APC-board resistor on the pickup must not be adjusted at all, and the four servo adjustments need an oscilloscope and a test disc.[10]

General tooling is on Recommended Tools; the symptom-by-symptom picture is on Capacitor Failure Symptoms.

After the recap

[edit | edit source]
  • Check +5 V, +9 V and +3.3 V at the main board.[6]
  • With a disc playing, the RF eye pattern at the RF test point should be 0.8 to 1.4 Vp-p. Below 0.8 Vp-p Sega says to replace the pickup.[10]
