Sega Service Manual - Sega Saturn Pal - 1 June 1995

From RetroTechCollection

The Sega Service Manual, Sega Saturn (PAL), No. 013-1, issued June 1995, is Sega Enterprises, Ltd.'s service manual for the first-generation PAL Saturn, model MK-80200-50. It documents the VA0 PAL main board, the separate SH-1 (CD subsystem) board, the small power indicator and reset-switch boards, and the CD drive unit. The scan has 68 PDF pages for 77 printed pages, because the A3 schematics and board drawings are scanned as two-page spreads, and it has an OCR text layer.

PDF pages 3 and 4 are not part of the manual: they are an inserted two-page English sheet headed "Saturn compatability" (sic), on audio CD, CD+G, MPEG and Photo CD support, with a glossary of graphics terms.

What this manual settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Ratings (p. 3): AC 220-240 V 50/60 Hz, about 20 W; 5 to 35 °C at 10 to 80% RH; 260 × 230 × 83 mm; two SH-2 CPUs at 28.4 MHz and a 68EC000 at 11.3 MHz; the memory sizes.
  • The power supply is a bought-in unit, "AC power unit Saturn EUR" (400-5271 or 400-5272), with a 1.6 A fuse (514-5066); its mains inlet and fuse are marked as safety-critical parts (p. 71). The block diagram shows it feeding the main board at CN3 with +9 V (CD drive and PLL), +5 V and +3.3 V (SDRAM) (pp. 11-12). The position silkscreened FUSE on the main board is a jumper wire, 600-6458 (p. 76).
  • The CD drive check: RF level 0.8 to 1.4 Vp-p at the RF test point, pickup replacement below 0.8 Vp-p, and no adjustment of the APC-board variable resistor. The servo adjustments are R114 (FE bias, 0 V), R111 (focus gain, −7 mV), R104 (FE balance) and R113 (tracking gain, 0.4 V), with an A-BEC TCD-792A test disc (pp. 8-10). Observe the beam from more than 30 cm (p. 2).
  • The capacitor numbering. Most electrolytics on the main board are CE-numbered chip parts (150- part numbers), but CE1, CE2 and CE4 are ceramics (151-) and CE32 is a tantalum (153-); the SH-1 board's electrolytic is C121 (pp. 74-77).
  • The clocks. The PAL parts list fits a 17.7344 MHz crystal at X1, a 4 MHz resonator at X3 and a 32.768 kHz crystal at X4 (p. 76), and the specification gives 28.4 MHz, while the block diagram shows the NTSC figures, 14.318 MHz and 28.6 MHz.
  • The backup cell: a CR2032 (401-0054) in a Matsushita holder behind a battery lid (pp. 5, 71).
  • The board assemblies: main board 837-11492 "ASSY IC BD SATURN VA0 PAL" (silkscreened 837-11493, 171-6963B), SH-1 board 838-10834, CD drive unit 610-5679-20 or -21 (pp. 27, 71).

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No circuit or parts list for the power supply, which is listed only as a complete unit.
  • No troubleshooting flow chart or symptom table.
  • Nothing on NTSC machines or on later main boards, including the HST-3210 layout with the CD subsystem on the main board. For the VA13 board see the VA13 schematic set; for a traced VA0.5 board see the Sega Saturn VA0.5 Schematics.
  • No CD drive schematic or parts breakdown beyond the adjustment points.
