Sega Service Manual - Genesis II / Mega Drive II - June 1993

From RetroTechCollection

The Sega Service Manual, Genesis II / Mega Drive II (PAL-B/I/G, RGB), manual No. 001, issued June 1993, is Sega Enterprises, Ltd.'s service manual for the first (VA0) board of the Model 2 console. It covers both the US Genesis II and the PAL and RGB Mega Drive II. The scan has 39 pages, the printed page numbers match the PDF page numbers, and the A3 fold-out schematics and board drawings are scanned whole at 300 dpi. It has an OCR text layer.

Two supplements amend it: No. 001-1 (August 1993) and No. 001-2 (December 1993). A second, greyscale scan of this same manual, split by paper size, is described at Sega Mega Drive 2 / Genesis 2 VA0 Service Manual.

What this manual settles

[edit | edit source]
  • The encoder variants. Sega fitted IC11 as type F (MB3514PF-G-BND-EF, 313-5232-A), type S (CXA1145M-T6, 313-5213-A) or type SM (KA2195D, 313-5236-A), and tells the engineer to identify the fitted part first (p. 2). The parts list marks the MB3514 for NTSC-F, PAL and RGB boards and the other two for NTSC boards only (p. 30).
  • The capacitor numbering. Electrolytics are a separate CE series, CE1 to CE32 with no CE13, all with 150- part numbers; ceramics are the C series with 151- part numbers. CE14 is 10 µF 16 V on NTSC-S and NTSC-SM boards and 220 µF 6.3 V on NTSC-F, PAL and RGB boards (pp. 31-32). The Model 1 "M5" board numbers everything in one C sequence.
  • The power input. The DC jack CN7 (EIAJ-3, 212-5353) is wired centre-positive through CF1, the power switch S2 and D2 to CE16 (220 µF 16 V) and the single 7805 regulator IC12 (pp. 11, 35).
  • The board assemblies: 837-9602-S, -F and -SM (USA VA0, by encoder type) and 837-9603 (Europe VA0) (p. 28).
  • The AC adaptors: 400-5135A, AC 120 V to DC 10 V 0.85 A, for the Genesis II; 400-5208 (UK) and 400-5211 (Australia and New Zealand), AC 240 V to DC 9 V 0.85 A, and 400-5209, AC 230 V to DC 10 V 0.85 A, for the Mega Drive II elsewhere (pp. 37-38).
  • The oscillator: 53.693175 MHz (230-5053-01D) on NTSC boards and 53.203424 MHz (230-5058-01D) on PAL and RGB boards (p. 30).
  • The connectors: CN1 9-pin mini-DIN AV output, CN2 60-pin expansion edge for the Mega-CD, CN3 64-pin cartridge connector, CN5 the two controller ports (pp. 7, 35).
  • Ratings as printed (p. 3): 18 W; 5 to 35 °C and 20 to 80% RH; 220 × 212 × 59 mm. The table gives AC 220 V 50 Hz for PAL-I, AC 240 V 50 Hz for PAL-B and AC 220 V 50 Hz for PAL-G and RGB.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No troubleshooting flow chart, test procedure or voltage table. Fault-finding has to be worked out from the schematics.
  • No adjustment procedures.
  • Nothing on the VA1 or later boards. For VA1 see the December 1993 supplement; for the US VA3 board see the SEGA Genesis Model 2 VA3 Service Manual.
  • The IC1 pin description on p. 16 contains an error that Sega corrected in the August 1993 supplement.
  • Nothing on the Mega-CD 2 or the 32X.
