StyleWriter 1500 Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The StyleWriter 1500 volume of Apple's Service Source is the service manual for the Apple StyleWriter 1500 ink-jet printer, which the same manual also calls the Color StyleWriter 1500: it takes either a black-only cartridge or a three-colour (cyan, magenta, yellow) cartridge. The PDF has 89 pages and a text layer, and is dated February 1996 in its metadata.

The introduction lists the differences from the StyleWriter 1200: a sheet feeder changed for the vendor's new paper-feeding scheme, a matching cover over the controller and feed rollers, no error LED, no paper output tray, no internal power supply (it uses an external power adapter), and two extra print modes, Fine (360 dpi) and Smooth (720 × 360 dpi). The black-only cartridge is the same as the StyleWriter 1200's.

Measurements and service information

[edit | edit source]
Check Where Expected
Power adapter output Adapter connector 11.5 to 15.5 V; outside this range replace the adapter, inside it replace the logic board
Carriage motor Connector CNCR on the logic board, pins 1–2 and 3–4 About 7 Ω each; otherwise replace the carriage motor
Home-position sensor Connector CNH pin 29 on the logic board, printer on 4.8 V ± 0.2 V with the carriage at home; 0.15 V ± 0.15 V with it at the centre

The Troubleshooting chapter also lists the initial start-up sequence (ROM/RAM test, power LED, carriage and paper-feed motor initialisation, ink cartridge check). The EEPROM Reset procedure clears data stored on the logic board and must be run after replacing the ink absorbers or the logic board.

The exploded view gives part numbers for the logic board (661-1111), carriage motor (922-1923), paper feed motor (922-1924), carriage unit (922-1927), purge unit (922-2063), cut sheet feeder (922-1903) and the covers and rollers.
