What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Both specifications, including the expansion bus speeds (4.77 MHz on the PC5086, 8 MHz on the PC5286) and the power available to the two slots: +5 V ±5% at 2 A, +12 V ±5% at 0.5 A, −12 V and −5 V ±10% at 0.1 A each.
  • The clock memory: a replaceable CMOS RAM with a built-in lithium battery on the PC5086, and a fixed CMOS RAM with a replaceable, rechargeable Ni-Cad battery on the PC5286.
  • The option links (LK1 and LK7 on both boards; LK7 clears the PC5286 CMOS RAM), the PC5286 SIMM rules, and every start-up message with its meaning.
  • That the keyboard must be switched to XT for the PC5086 and to AT for the PC5286, and that the hard disk heads park automatically at power-off.

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • Schematics, parts lists, component values, or anything about the power supply. Amstrad's service manual for both models and their monitors (reference 272826, 78 pages) is held in paper form by the Centre for Computing History and has not been scanned.[2][3]
  • Disassembly beyond removing the cover to reach the slots, links, SIMM sockets and co-processor socket.
  • Details of the floppy drive, which uses a single 26-way cable for data and power.[4]
