Goldstar GDO-203 Capacitor Replacement Guide

No capacitor list, schematic or board photograph has been published for the Goldstar GDO-203 Alive II, and no published source gives its main board number.[1][2] The power supply is inside the case, fed from a two-pin mains inlet on the rear, and a GDO-203P's plate rates it at 220 V, 50 Hz and 9 W.[2][3] Anyone recapping one has to read the values off the board.
Before you start
[edit | edit source]- Pull the mains lead out of the inlet before opening the console.[2]
- Photograph the console's rating plate and the main board's printed number before anything else. They identify the board for anyone comparing notes later.
- Do not use a list for another 3DO. The GDO-101M lists belong to other boards. The GDO-202P, GoldStar's other Anvil console, has its supply on its main board, but it is a front-loader in a different case, and nothing published shows whether the Alive II's board resembles it.[4][5]
Which capacitors matter most
[edit | edit source]The 3DO Development Repo reports that on 3DO consoles the power supply capacitors and the RAM decoupling capacitors are the ones known to go bad, and that bad capacitors can stop a console reading pressed discs. For a poor picture or none it says to check the supply and video capacitors.[6] On the GDO-203 a missing picture has another cause that a recap can introduce: the video grounds reach the board only through the RF shield and its screw, so the picture fails if they are not refitted.[6]
Recording the board
[edit | edit source]- Pull the mains lead, open the console and lift away anything covering the main board. Keep the RF shield and every screw.
- Photograph the whole board from directly above, then each group of capacitors close up so the printing on the sleeves can be read.
- For each electrolytic, write down the designator printed beside it, its capacitance, voltage rating, diameter, height, temperature rating and the side the stripe faces. Note any part marked NP or BP, which is non-polarised.
- Do the same for the disc drive's own board, if it has one, before disturbing its flexible cable.
- Check the list against the photographs before ordering.
Procedure
[edit | edit source]- Work on one area at a time, starting with the power supply section. Mark each capacitor's polarity on your photograph before removing it.
- Remove the capacitor, clean any electrolyte off the pads and the parts round them, and check the tracks for corrosion.
- Fit a part of the same capacitance and at least the same voltage rating, with the same diameter where space is tight, and the stripe on the same side.
- Refit the RF shield and its screw, and every cable, before switching on.[6]
After the recap
[edit | edit source]Test with a pressed game disc and an audio CD. The GDO-203 refuses CD-Rs by design, so a CD-R tells you nothing about the drive.[6] If there is no picture, check the RF shield screw first. Faults that remain are covered in the Goldstar GDO-203 Troubleshooting Guide. If you record a full list from your board, keep it with the board number and the console's serial number.
