Goldstar GDO-203 General Maintenance

The Goldstar GDO-203, sold in South Korea as the 3DO Alive II, is GoldStar's last 3DO. It loads discs from the top, under a lid in the middle of the case, and uses the Anvil chipset with a Hitachi laser.[1][2][3] Its drive and case have nothing in common with the front-loading GDO-101, GDO-101M and GDO-202, so their drive procedures do not apply. GoldStar's service documentation for the Alive II is not available online, and no photograph of its main board has been published.

Safety

[edit | edit source]

The GDO-203 has a two-pin "figure 8" mains inlet on the rear, so the lead is detachable.[2] Pull the lead out of the console before opening it. A GDO-203P photographed by archive3do is rated for 220 V, 50 Hz and 9 W; read the plate on the base of your own console before connecting it.[4] Run a 220 V console from a step-up transformer on 110–120 V mains.

Opening the lid exposes the spindle and the laser lens in its slot. The case beside the bay is moulded "NEVER TOUCH THE LENS" in four languages, and a yellow Korean label on the bay says the same and asks for each disc to be pressed fully onto the spindle before use.[5] Seat each disc with a firm press on the centre before closing the lid.

  1. Do not touch the lens with your fingers.[5]
  2. If it is dirty and the console misreads discs, clean it gently with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud. A fogged or scratched lens means a new laser.[6][7]
  3. Leave the laser's adjustment pot alone unless you have an oscilloscope to set it. Turning it up by trial and error can destroy the laser or blow the fuse.[6]

The laser is a Hitachi HOP-E1. The 3DO Development Repo lists the NEC PC-FX and the DCM-5000 as other devices that use the same pickup.[3]

Video and the RF shield

[edit | edit source]

On one owner's GDO-203 the video grounds were not soldered to the board and reached it only through the RF shield and its screw. With the shield or the screw missing, the picture failed.[6] Whenever the console has been opened, refit the shield and its screw before testing the picture.

Region parts

[edit | edit source]

The video standard is set by the crystal X101 and the resistor position R10P, which are tabled on the silkscreen beside the access light: a 49.09 MHz half-can crystal with R10P empty for NTSC, and a 50.00 MHz crystal with R10P fitted for PAL.[8] Leave them as found unless you are converting the console; the Goldstar GDO-203 Troubleshooting Guide gives what is known about the conversion.

Save memory

[edit | edit source]

GoldStar's earlier GDO-101M keeps saves in 32 KB of battery-backed SRAM, and the GDO-202P has its coin cell soldered to the main board beside the SRAM.[9][10] Where the Alive II's cell is, and what type it is, have not been published. When the console is open, look for a coin cell, note its type, and check the board round it for corrosion; see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.

Capacitors

[edit | edit source]

No capacitor list or board photograph has been published for the GDO-203. The 3DO Development Repo names the power supply capacitors and the RAM decoupling capacitors as the ones known to go bad on 3DO consoles.[6] The Goldstar GDO-203 Capacitor Replacement Guide sets out how to record the board before replacing anything. For the warning signs see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.

Things that are not faults

[edit | edit source]
  • The GDO-203 will not play CD-Rs. It and the GDO-202 detect recordable discs and refuse them by design. Test the drive with pressed discs.[6]
  • A GDO-203P is a PAL console. On an NTSC television its picture may roll or show in black and white.[6][4]
