IBM Hardware Maintenance Service (March 1986)
The Hardware Maintenance Service manual, IBM part number 6280087, Revised Edition (March 1986), is IBM's service manual for the IBM Personal Computer (5150), Personal Computer XT (5160), Portable Personal Computer (5155) and Personal Computer AT (5170). It replaced the machine-by-machine service manuals with one manual in two parts: system-specific sections for each machine, and a common set of numbered diagnostic maintenance analysis procedures (MAPs). The four sections listed below are hosted as PDFs. Minuszerodegrees.net, which supplied them, has the whole manual section by section.[1]
The preface describes the structure: for each system, "Start" (the entry point for all diagnostic procedures), "Jumpers and switch settings" and "Parts catalog", followed by the diagnostic MAPs. Removal and replacement procedures are not in this manual; IBM put them in the companion Hardware Maintenance Reference. The manual expects a Triplett Model 310 multimeter or equivalent.[2] Minuszerodegrees records that the manual was supplied with Advanced Diagnostics version 2.20 and Advanced Diagnostics for the AT version 2.03, and that its copy incorporates the Model 339 supplement for the last AT model (document 6280139, March 18, 1986).[1]

What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- No schematics, component values or capacitor lists. Every MAP ends at a replaceable unit: a power supply, a system board, an adapter, a drive.
- No removal and replacement procedures; those are in the Hardware Maintenance Reference.[2]
- The Advanced Diagnostics diskettes are not part of the scan.
- The other MAPs and the jumper and switch sections are on minuszerodegrees.net only.[1]
What it settles
[edit | edit source]- IBM's 1986 supply limits for the PC and XT (MAP 0020 Power (PC), p. 0020-3) and the AT (MAP 0020 Power (AT), p. 0020-3), and the minimum system board resistances for the PC and XT (p. 0020-9).
- That an AT with no fixed disk needs the power supply load resistor, FRU 8286123, on P10 or P11 (MAP 0020, p. 0020-3; Parts (AT), p. 9).
- The FRU part numbers for the 5150 and 5170 power supplies, system boards, AT battery and drive belts.
