IBM PC AT 5170 Technical Reference (September 1985)
The Technical Reference for the IBM Personal Computer AT (5170) dated September 1985 is IBM's design reference covering the type 1 and type 2 system boards. It is printed as "First Edition (September, 1985)", and its reader's comment form gives the part number 6280070. The hosted PDF has 500 pages. The BIOS listing is the 06/10/85 revision.

- Glossary, bibliography and index
The page numbering in Section 1 differs from the March 1984 edition, so page references do not carry across.
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- It is not a service manual: no FRU part numbers, removal procedures or problem isolation charts. See IBM Hardware Maintenance Service (March 1986) and IBM Personal Computer Family Service Information Manual.
- The logic diagrams have no parts list or board placement drawing.
- It predates the 8 MHz type 3 board (Models 319 and 339) and the 11/15/85 BIOS.
What it settles
[edit | edit source]- The two board sizes: type 1 about 30.5 by 35 cm (12 by 13.8 in), type 2 about 23.8 by 35 cm (9.3 by 13.8 in), and their memory: four banks of nine 128K-by-1 modules on type 1, two banks of nine 256K-by-1 modules on type 2 (pp. 1-3, 1-4).
- The power supply specification (pp. 3-3 to 3-7), including the per-pin maximum currents on P8 to P12 (p. 3-7) and the 5 ohm, 50 W load resistor on P10 when no fixed disk is fitted (p. 3-5).
- The system unit's weight of 20.0 kg (44 lb) (p. 1-69). IBM's 1989 service manual gives 19.05 kg (42 lb).
