Magnavox Odyssey 2000 Capacitor Replacement Guide

The Magnavox Odyssey 2000 (BH7510) has three aluminium electrolytic capacitors, all on the main board and all 470 µF 16 V. The RF modulator has none. Magnavox's Service Manual No. 6507 gives the type, value, rating and part number of each in the parts list, shows them on the schematic and marks them on the board drawing.[1][2][3] For the general signs of a failed capacitor see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
Before replacing anything
[edit | edit source]The console runs from six C cells or a 9 V adaptor, so there is no mains voltage inside it.[4] Magnavox's manual names no capacitor as a known fault. Measure the supply before unsoldering anything: 9 V at the collector of the regulator Q1 and 6.4 V at its emitter and at IC1 pin 4.[2]
Electrolytic capacitors
[edit | edit source]| Ref | Value | Rating | Magnavox part no. | Circuit (schematic) | Position (board drawing) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | 470 µF | 16 V | 270109-5215 | 9 V line after the power switch S1, at the collector of Q1 | Under the battery ground terminal W5 |
| C2 | 470 µF | 16 V | 270109-5215 | 9 V input from the cells or adaptor jack J1, after the 1 mH choke L4 | Beside C1, under W6 and W7 |
| C9 | 470 µF | 16 V | 270109-5215 | Supply to the sound amplifier Q3, fed through R6 (1 kΩ) | Beside Q3 |
The parts list and the schematic agree on all three. The photograph of a Philips Odyssey 2000 board shows C1 beside W5 and C9 beside Q3 as blue radial parts.[1][2][5] The Philips version has no adaptor socket.[6]
Other capacitors
[edit | edit source]Capacitors not listed separately are 10 %, 500 V parts unless the schematic marks them otherwise.[1]
| Ref | Type and value | Where |
|---|---|---|
| C3 | Ceramic, 82 pF 5 % N750 (the parts list prints 83 pF) | 2 MHz oscillator |
| C4 | Trimmer, 6–38 pF | Sets the 2 MHz oscillator |
| C5 | Ceramic, 82 pF 5 % N1500 | 2 MHz oscillator |
| C6 | 0.01 µF 20 % 100 V | Oscillator supply, after R4 (560 Ω) |
| C7 | 0.001 µF 20 % | IC1 supply, pin 4 |
| C8, C10 | Metallised polyester, 0.068 µF (400 V in the parts list, 250 V on the schematic) | Right and left player control inputs, pins 11 and 12 |
| C22 | 0.01 µF 20 % 100 V | Switched 9 V line |
| C23 | Ceramic, 10 pF 5 % NPO | From the clock line (IC1 pin 17) to ground |
| C24 | Ceramic, 22 pF 10 % NPO | From the video line (W11) to ground |
| C25 | Ceramic, 1.5 pF ± 0.1 pF NPO | Between the 9 V line and the player control circuit |
| C26 | 0.01 µF 20 % | Left player control circuit, R10 |
The oscillator capacitors C3 and C5 have specified temperature coefficients; replace them only with the same types, then reset the oscillator with C4. The RF modulator's capacitors are NPO and N220 ceramics and the 2–22 pF trimmer C5; disturbing them means repeating the channel 3 and 4 adjustment.[1][4]
Procedure
[edit | edit source]- Take out the cells and unplug the adaptor.
- Open the console and free the board as described on the maintenance page.
- Note the polarity of each capacitor before removing it. The board drawing marks the positive lead of each.[3]
- Fit 470 µF radial capacitors rated 16 V or more.[1]
- Clean off the flux, refit the board and check 6.4 V at IC1 pin 4.[2]
- Check the picture on channels 3 and 4 and the sound.[4]
Recording your own board
[edit | edit source]Magnavox's board drawing is of board 211077-5 (703837). If your board carries a different number, or a capacitor's printed value differs from the table, write down the designator, value, voltage and polarity of each part before removing anything. The parts list warns that a replacement part may differ in part number or value from the one fitted at the factory.[3][1]
