IBM Personal System 2 Hardware Maintenance Manual (S52G-9971-02, October 1994)

From RetroTechCollection

The IBM Personal System/2 Hardware Maintenance Manual, form number S52G-9971-02, part number 83G8990, is the Third Edition (October 1994) of IBM's single-volume service manual for "IBM Personal System/2 desktop and floor-standing computers". The PDF has 484 pages; the printed page numbers run to 468. It obsoletes the previous PS/2 HMM (71G3716, S52G-9971) and eleven HMM and OBI supplements, which are listed on p. iv.

Unlike the earlier model pamphlets, it carries its own safety information (pp. 365-369), so it can be used without the general HMR and HMS binders. Laptop, notebook and portable machines are in the separate IBM Mobile Systems HMM, and PS/ValuePoint machines in the PS/ValuePoint HMM (related publications, p. iv).

  • Supply voltage checks (pp. 138-149) with connector pinouts for each model group. The AT-bus machines (25, 30, 33, 35, 40) have a -5 V output; the Model 35/40/56/57/76/77 supply is started for testing by shorting P2 pin 4 to pin 6 (p. 140). The Models 60, 65 and 80 table allows +3.7 to +6.2 V on the +5 V pins and +9.0 to +15.0 V on +12 V (p. 142). The Model 90 table gives +4.8 to +5.25 V and +11.5 to +12.6 V (p. 142).
  • Numeric error codes with FRU order, AT bus (p. 15) and Micro Channel (p. 33).
  • FRU numbers for each model's supply, system board and drives (parts catalogue).

The Models 50 and 70 table on p. 141 prints "+15.0 / +15.0" and "+6.2 / +6.2" as minimum and maximum; these are misprints and cannot be used as limits.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

IBM's method is FRU exchange: the manual names part numbers, not component values. There is no schematic and no board-level parts list, and each supply is a single FRU. The model pamphlets (HMR and HMS) give more removal detail for the machines they cover.
