Magnavox Odyssey 4000 Capacitor Replacement Guide

The Magnavox Odyssey 4000 (BH7511) has four aluminium electrolytic capacitors, all on the main board: three 470 µF parts around the regulator Q1 and a 10 µF part on the supply to the RF modulator. The RF modulator and the hand controls have none.[1][2][3] Magnavox's Service Manual No. 6508 gives each one's value, rating and part number in the parts list, shows it on the schematic and marks it on the board drawing.[1][3][4] For the general signs of a failed capacitor see Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
Before replacing anything
[edit | edit source]The console runs from a 9 V adaptor, so there is no mains voltage inside it.[5] Magnavox's manual names no capacitor as a known fault. Measure the regulator first, with 9 V at the adaptor input: 8.3 V at the collector of Q1, 6.9 V at its base and 6.2 V at its emitter.[3]
Electrolytic capacitors
[edit | edit source]| Ref | Value | Rating | Magnavox part no. | Circuit (schematic) | Board drawing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | 470 µF | 16 V | 270144-5215 | Supply after L1 and the power switch S4, at the collector of Q1 (8.3 V) | Top left, beside C2 and R1 |
| C3 | 470 µF | 16 V | 270144-5215 | Base of Q1 with the zener Z1 (6.9 V), fed through R1 (100 Ω) | Beside Q1 and Z1 |
| C4 | 470 µF | 16 V | 270144-5215 | Regulated 6.2 V line at the emitter of Q1 | Beside L1 |
| C14 | 10 µF | 35 V | 270109-1135 | Supply to the RF modulator, after R6 (820 Ω) | Beside R6 and P4 |
The parts list and the schematic agree on all four values and ratings.[1][3] The three 470 µF parts carry a 270144 number, where the Odyssey 2000's 470 µF 16 V capacitors are 270109-5215.[1][6]
Other capacitors
[edit | edit source]The schematic's notes give capacitor tolerances as 20 % unless marked otherwise.[3]
| Ref | Type and value | Where (schematic) |
|---|---|---|
| C6, C8 | Metallised polyester, 0.068 µF 10 % 250 V | Right (C6) and left (C8) hand control inputs |
| C10 | Trimmer, 2–22 pF 100 V | Sets the 3.58 MHz clock, IC2 pin 3 |
| C11 | Ceramic, 10 pF 5 % 500 V NPO | Crystal circuit, IC2 pin 2 |
| C12, C13 | Metallised polyester, 0.1 µF 10 % 100 V | Logic input lines to IC1 |
| C19 | Metallised polyester, 0.047 µF 20 % 250 V | Hue control line, IC2 pin 4 |
Do not disturb C10 or C11 without a frequency counter to hand: the clock must be reset to 3,579,545 Hz ± 50 Hz at IC2 pin 6 afterwards, and the hue after that.[7] The RF modulator uses NPO and N220 ceramics and the trimmer C5; disturbing them means repeating the channel 3 and 4 adjustment.[2][7]
Procedure
[edit | edit source]- Unplug the adaptor and both hand controls.
- Open the cabinet as described on the maintenance page.
- Note the polarity of each capacitor; the board drawing marks the positive lead.[4]
- Fit 470 µF in C1, C3 and C4, rated 16 V or more, and 10 µF in C14, rated 35 V or more.[1]
- Clean off the flux and check 6.9 V at the base and 6.2 V at the emitter of Q1 with 9 V at the input.[3]
- Check the picture and the background colours on each game.[7]
