Psion Series 7 User Guide

From RetroTechCollection
Psion Series 7 - where things are (front)
"Where things are" diagram from the guide (p. 2)

The Psion Series 7 User Guide is Psion Computers PLC's 226-page user guide for the Psion Series 7: version 1.0, August 1999, part number 6131-0004-01. Its FCC declaration of conformity names the product as "Series 7, Models: 16M/32M".[1]

It is a user manual, not a service document. For a repairer it records what the machine is meant to do: the layout of controls, the reset procedures, battery handling, memory expansion and Psion's own specification.

The remaining chapters cover the built-in programs (Word, Sheet, Data, Contacts, Agenda, Jotter, Web, Email, Calc, Time, Sketch, Spell, Record, Bombs), OPL programming, PsiWin, printing, infrared and dialling.[1]

Two figures in the specification differ from other Psion sources. It gives the processor as an SA-1100 at 100 MHz, where Psion Teklogix give 133 MHz and the machine reports 132.71 MHz, and a keyboard of 84 keys, where Psion's netBook datasheet gives 58 keys for the same keyboard.[2][3][4] For hardware limits the Psion Teklogix FAQ is the better source: it gives the Series 7 PC Card slot a 200 mA limit and states that the operating system is in ROM and cannot be updated in the field.[3]

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No exploded diagram, part numbers or spares list
  • No schematic, component designators or capacitor values
  • No disassembly sequence
  • No fault codes; the Psion Series 5 Service Manual has Psion's Final Test codes for the Series 5, but no equivalent is known for the Series 7

Psion published no service manual for the Series 7 or Psion netBook that is known to survive.

Build 756 patch readme

[edit | edit source]

Psion Enterprise Computing's two-page readme for the Series 7 Patch (build version 756), © 2000, is also hosted.[5] It says:

  • The patch should only be installed on a Series 7 at build version 750 or later. The build is shown under the main menu, Information, "About netBook"; the Series 7 menu really does say netBook. The version appears as "ASCII (Build XXX)".
  • The patch is two files, Rom_4mb.img and Update.exe, copied to the root of C:\ with PsiWin or by CompactFlash. Update.exe is then run on the machine.
  • The unit must stay on the mains adapter, through the DC jack, for the whole update. Any interruption to the power could leave the machine unusable.
  • After the green PASS screen, remove the DC jack, the main battery and the backup lithium battery, then refit the main battery to reboot.[5]

The patch can fail on an aged machine and erase the ROM; see Build 756 patch in the troubleshooting guide before running it.
