Intellivision Service Manuals

From RetroTechCollection

Two Mattel Electronics service documents for the original Intellivision Master Component, model 2609: the full Service Manual and the shorter Subassembly Service Manual. Neither is dated. Both were printed by Mattel Electronics, 5150 Rosecrans Avenue, Hawthorne, California.

Full service manual

[edit | edit source]

The full manual covers the Master Component down to component level.[1] Its sections, with the PDF pages of this copy:

  • Specifications, p. S-1 (PDF p. 3), and operating instructions (PDF pp. 4–5).
  • Section 1, system description and operation (PDF pp. 6–10): the transformer and switch assembly, the power supply board, the logic board, the hand controllers, the antenna switch box, and the theory of operation of the CPU, STIC, system RAM, graphics memory, colour oscillator, program ROM and sound generator.
  • Section 2, system testing and troubleshooting (PDF pp. 11–23): the MTE-201 diagnostic routine, the failure code table (p. 2-5), the individual test menu, the power supply test with test point limits and transformer voltages (pp. 2-7 and 2-8), the IC substitution sequence (p. 2-9) and the symptom, suspect and remedy chart (pp. 2-10 to 2-13).
  • Section 3, disassembly (PDF pp. 24–25).
  • Section 4, repair, replacement and adjustment (PDF pp. 26–32): hand controller repair, logic board and power supply board inspection, transformer and switch wiring, printed circuit board repair, IC heatsink replacement.
  • Section 5, assembly (PDF pp. 33–34).
  • Section 6, parts list (PDF pp. 35–43): console assembly with exploded view (Figure 6-1), hand controller assembly, and the logic board parts list with every capacitor, resistor, IC and socket (pp. 6-7 and 6-8).
  • Section 7, schematic diagrams and technical information (PDF pp. 44–66): the logic board schematic (Figure 7-2, a fold-out sheet), waveforms, the power supply board schematic, and data pages for the CP-1610, RA-3-9600, RO-3-9504, RO-3-9503, AY-3-8900-1, AY-3-8914, RO-3-9502, AY-3-8915, 3539 RAM, 7407 and 74LS125, the RF modulator and the power transformer.
  • Section 8, packing instructions (PDF pp. 67–68).

This copy is a cleaned-up scan made by Alexandre Tabajara in 2022 and uploaded to the Internet Archive under a Portuguese title; the manual itself is Mattel's English edition.[2]

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]

PDF pages 39 and 40 are the restorer's placeholder pages, reading "MISSING PARTS LIST!" and "MISSING FIGURE 6-3!". This copy has no power supply board parts list; the values are printed on the power supply schematic (PDF p. 47), and the complete parts list is in the subassembly manual below.[1] There is no service bulletin or revision history, and the manual does not cover the Intellivision II, which has its own manual.

Subassembly service manual

[edit | edit source]

The subassembly manual is written for repair by exchanging the logic board, power supply board, transformer assembly or hand controllers.[3] Its contents, with its own page numbers:

  • Diagnostic routine with the MTE-201 test cartridge, p. 2
  • Preliminary checklist, p. 5
  • Troubleshooting, p. 6, including the power supply checks at test points TP1 to TP6 (pp. 6–8) and the test cartridge checksum
  • Disassembly: console, logic board, power supply board and transformer assembly, pp. 10–12
  • Hand controller repair, p. 13
  • Power supply board repair (schematic), p. 17
  • Parts list, p. 18
  • Exploded view of the console assembly, p. 20

The power supply board parts list on p. 18 gives the value, rating and Mattel part number of every capacitor on that board, and the two regulators (μA7805 and LM340T12).[3]

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]

There is no logic board schematic or logic board parts list, no theory of operation and no MTE-201 failure code table; those are in the full service manual. Where the two manuals overlap, on the power supply limits and the test cartridge checksum (keys 2 and 8), they agree. The subassembly manual omits the individual test menu that the service manual opens with keys 1 and 7.[3][1]
