| Interface | 9-pin plug into port 1 (the rear controller socket) of the ColecoVision[1] |
| Compatible | ColecoVision[1] |
| Model | 2413[1] |
| Power | Four C alkaline cells, or Coleco's #2298 Perma Power battery eliminator[1] |
The ColecoVision Expansion Module 2 (Expansion Module #2, model 2413) is Coleco's driving controller for the ColecoVision: a dashboard unit with a steering wheel, a separate accelerator pedal, and a well that holds the player's ColecoVision hand controller, whose control stick then works as the gear lever.[1][2] Despite its name it plugs into a controller socket, not the Expansion Module Interface on the front of the console.[3] It runs on four C cells or Coleco's #2298 Perma Power battery eliminator.[1]
Care is on ColecoVision Expansion Module 2 General Maintenance and fault-finding on ColecoVision Expansion Module 2 Troubleshooting Guide. The module has no electrolytic capacitors, so it has no capacitor guide.[4]

History
[edit | edit source]Coleco packed the module with its Turbo cartridge. Destructor, Bump 'n' Jump, Pitstop and The Dukes of Hazzard also use it.[3] ColecoVision.dk adds Zippy Race.[2] Coleco's owner's manual is dated 1982.[1]
The pedal is an on/off switch, so the car is either accelerating or not.[3][2] CBS Electronics sold the module in Europe; colecovisionadam.com lists boxes numbered 2413 for the United States and Canada, 7452-6 for the UK, 7452-6F for France and 241301 for the rest of Europe.[5]
Connecting
[edit | edit source]
- Fit four C alkaline cells in the compartment under the module, or connect the #2298 battery eliminator.
- Unplug the port 1 hand controller from the console and set it aside.
- Plug the module's connector cord into port 1, the rear jack.
- Lift the accelerator pedal out of its storage well, plug its cord into the jack on the front of the module and put the pedal on the floor.
- Lift the port 2 hand controller out of the console, slide it into the well on the module and press it down until it clips in. It stays plugged into port 2, the front jack.
- Insert the cartridge with the console switched off.
Steps from Coleco's manual.[1]
Hardware
[edit | edit source]The steering board inside is marked "55888 REV D" and "COLECO 1982" on ColecoVision.dk's photograph.[6] A KiCad redrawing of it published by colecovisionadam.com shows a small circuit:[4]
- U2, a dual photo-interrupter in a black housing in the middle of the board, reads the steering wheel. Its two outputs go through Schmitt NAND gates in U1 (a 4093) and diodes D2 and D3 to two lines of the controller cable.
- The accelerator pedal is a switch. Its signal lead goes through D1 to another line of the cable.
- Three transistors, Q1, Q2 and Q3, connect the battery to the logic; Q1's base is driven from pin 3 of the controller plug.
- The only capacitor is C1, 100 nF.
The photographed board has an SGS HCF4093BE in the U1 position.[6]
| Plug pin | Wire | Board connection | Carries |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Orange | J5 | Drive to Q1, which switches the battery supply on |
| 6 | Dark blue | J2 | Accelerator pedal, through D1 |
| 7 | Violet | J4 | Steering sensor output, through D3 |
| 8 | Grey | J1 | Module ground (battery negative and pedal return) |
| 9 | White | J3 | Steering sensor output, through D2 |
Source: the KiCad redrawing.[4] Coleco's technical manual describes the console's spinner interface as two inputs on each port that read two square waves; the phase between them gives the direction and the pulse timing the speed.[7]
