ColecoVision Roller Controller Troubleshooting Guide

Fault-finding for the ColecoVision Roller Controller. Coleco's owner's manual lists three faults. Beyond those, the checks below follow the circuit as two independent schematic redrawings show it, together with the console's own spinner interface checks.[1][2][3] Connection and care are on ColecoVision Roller Controller General Maintenance.
Coleco's troubleshooting chart
[edit | edit source]| Symptom | Remedy |
|---|---|
| Snow on the screen | Make sure both power supply connections are secure: the adapter plug in the console and the supply's jack in the adapter |
| No response from the hand controllers | Set the mode switch to JOYSTICK cartridge |
| Roller responds backwards | Check that the WYE cable jacks are in the correct console sockets: jack 1 in the rear socket, jack 2 in the front |
Chart and connection details from Coleco's manual.[1]
Nothing responds
[edit | edit source]- Check the mode switch. Roller games need ROLLER; joystick games need JOYSTICK.[1]
- Check the power path. The Roller Controller's logic runs from +5 V taken from the console's supply through the adapter plug, on a black-and-white lead with a black ground lead.[1][2] With the console on, measure between those two leads at the board.
- On an Adam, the Roller Controller needs Coleco's ADAM adapter in the memory console's POWER socket, with the Roller Controller in its ACCESSORY outlet.[1][4]
- Try a Super Action Controller or another spinner device if you have one. If no spinner works on either port, the fault is in the console: Coleco's tip for a dead spinner interface is to replace U24 if it is a Texas Instruments part, and its sheet 15 chart works through U7, U24 and the parts around them. See ColecoVision Troubleshooting Guide.[5]
One direction or one axis dead
[edit | edit source]Each axis has its own sensor and its own input chip: OS1 and U1 for north-south, OS2 and U6 for east-west, both 4093 Schmitt NAND gates.[2][3] That makes the working axis a reference for the dead one.
- Check that both channels of the dead axis's photo-interrupter produce a clean square wave as you turn the ball, and that its LED is being fed through its 100 Ω resistor.[2][3]
- Follow the two channels through the 4093 gates (U1 or U6) and compare them with the same pins on the working axis.[2]
- If the axis works in one direction only, the direction circuit is suspect: the 4013 flip-flops in U2, which compare the two channels, and the 4528 monostables in U5.[2][3]
- Swapped WYE jacks also reverse the response, which is the first thing Coleco's chart checks.[1]
Hand controllers or action buttons not working
[edit | edit source]- With the mode switch on JOYSTICK, the hand controllers in the wells should work. Their signals pass through the input mixers, 4081 AND and 4071 OR gates (U7 to U10), on the way to the console.[1][3]
- On Tomlin's diagram the lines from the hand controller connectors also carry four 6.2 V zener diodes, VR1 to VR4.[2]
- The four action buttons are SW5 to SW8.[2]
Snow on the screen
[edit | edit source]Coleco's chart treats snow as a power connection fault: reseat the adapter plug in the console and the supply's jack in the adapter.[1] The console's own power checks are on ColecoVision Troubleshooting Guide.
