Sinclair peripherals
[edit | edit source]Each peripheral page carries its own hardware, maintenance and troubleshooting sections.
Custom chips (ULAs)
[edit | edit source]Sinclair's machines were built around uncommitted logic arrays made by Ferranti. These pages describe each type, its pins and supplies, its marks and the faults Ferranti recorded, mostly from the Ferranti Archives 2026.
- Sinclair ZX81 ULA: the 2C158, 2C184 and 2C210 of the ZX81 and Timex Sinclair 1000.
- Sinclair ZX Spectrum ULA: the 5C102, 5C112 and 6C001 (with the NTSC 6C011) of the 16K and 48K Spectrum and Spectrum+.
- Sinclair ZX Spectrum Memory Timing: ULA-to-RAM timing and refresh, the 1983 R57 problem, the 6C001 mark 7 delays and the Issue 6A ZX8401 gate array.
- Sinclair ZX Spectrum 128 ULA: the 7K010 of the Spectrum 128 and the grey +2.
Ferranti Archives 2026
[edit | edit source]Ferranti Archives 2026 is Ferranti's own file on the ULAs it made for Sinclair and Timex from 1980 to 1986: 169 scans of logic diagrams, specifications, board drawings, test programs, memos and correspondence, released in October 2026 by the Happy Little Diodes YouTube channel. Every scan is hosted in Category:Ferranti Archives 2026 under the archive's non-commercial terms. Pages built from it:
- Ferranti Spectrum ULA Test Box: Ferranti's 1983 functional tester for Spectrum ULAs.
- Ferranti ZN401 Test Box: Ferranti's production tester for the ZN401, the chip of the Sinclair TV80 pocket television.
