The Apple Lisa 2 is the second version of the Apple Lisa, announced alongside the Macintosh in January 1984. It replaced the original Lisa's two "Twiggy" floppy drives with one Sony 3.5-inch drive, the same drive as the Macintosh's. It was sold as the Lisa 2/5 at US$3,495 and the Lisa 2/10 at US$5,495. In January 1985 the Lisa 2/10 was renamed the Macintosh XL and sold with MacWorks, and Apple dropped it in April 1985.[1]
Configurations
[edit | edit source]Apple's service manual describes the Lisa 2 family as five configurations: Lisa 2, Lisa 2/5, Macintosh XL (formerly Lisa 2/10), Modified Lisa 2/5 and Modified Macintosh XL.[3]
| Model | Hard disk | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lisa 2 | None | Has an external parallel port for a ProFile or other parallel device. Cannot take an internal hard disk: its I/O board and motherboard do not support one. Cannot run the Lisa Office System, which must be installed on a hard disk; MacWorks runs from the micro disk drive. |
| Lisa 2/5 | External 5 or 10 MB ProFile on the built-in parallel port | Apple: once a ProFile is connected, a Lisa 2 "becomes Lisa 2/5". Up to six ProFiles on optional parallel interface cards. |
| Lisa 2/10 (Macintosh XL) | Internal 10 MB hard disk on an internal parallel port | No external parallel connector. Its own I/O board, motherboard and power supply. |
Every Lisa 2 has one 3.5-inch drive: Apple's service manual says "Lisa 2, 2/5, and 2/10 have only one disk drive".[3] The owner's guide describes the three models on page 3, "Which Lisa 2 System Do You Have?".[4]
Hardware
[edit | edit source]The Lisa 2 keeps the Lisa's architecture: a 68000 at 5 MHz, the same CPU, memory and video boards, and the 720 × 364 display.[2][3]
Memory
[edit | edit source]The two memory boards are identical (661-93105). With one board fitted the Lisa 2 has 512 KB; with two it has 1 MB, Apple's maximum, though "two megabytes of memory are possible if third party memory boards are installed". Two boards are needed to run the diagnostic diskette and any version of the Lisa Workshop.[3]

The Lisa 2 power supply is the "8 Amp" supply rated at 1.2 A AC input; the Macintosh XL has the "10 amp" supply rated at 1.8 A AC.[3] Capacitor values from Apple's power supply schematic are on Apple Lisa Capacitor Replacement Guide.
Start-up self-test
[edit | edit source]Apple's troubleshooting guide gives the normal start-up sequence:[3]
- The on/off lamp lights.
- The Lisa is silent for about 3 seconds, then gives a single click.
- About 30 seconds after power-on, as the picture tube warms up, the screen shows four icons for the CPU, I/O, memory and expansion cards, each highlighted in turn as the boot ROM tests it.
- If a card fails, error tones sound and its icon is shown with a large X through it; or an error icon and error code are displayed.
A blank screen for the first 30 seconds is normal. Apple sends the technician to the video repair procedures only if there is no picture after 30 seconds, and to the start-up repair procedures if the single click does not occur or unexpected tones sound.[3] Error codes and Apple's replacement order are tabulated on Apple Lisa and Apple Lisa Troubleshooting.
Parameter memory is cleared by switching SW1 on the I/O board off for about 5 seconds and back on. The Lisa 2/10 I/O board has no switch.[3] The diagnostic program, LisaTest, starts at customer level; APPLE-SHIFT-S switches it to service level.[5]
Power supply and video symptoms
[edit | edit source]Apple's video repair table lists fixes in order of trial:[3]
| Symptom | Apple's fixes, in order |
|---|---|
| A sizzling noise coming from the Lisa | Replace power supply; adjust brightness; adjust contrast; replace video board; replace flyback |
| Power supply trips (turns off and on) | Adjust brightness; adjust contrast; replace power supply; replace video board; replace flyback |
| Blank screen, CRT filament not lit with the power on | Check connections; adjust brightness and contrast; replace video board; replace CPU board |
A supply that trips is therefore not automatically a supply fault. Apple's Level I procedures give video adjustments (horizontal phase, brightness, contrast, yoke and magnets) and no power supply voltage adjustment.[3]
Upgrades
[edit | edit source]Apple's service manual has an Upgrade and Retrofit section with Lisa 2/5 inventory upgrade instructions, a Lisa 2 upgrade, a Lisa 2/10 upgrade and the Macintosh XL Screen Modification Kit; the sections are dated January 1984, February 1984, April 1984 and August 1985.[3] The kit's user manual is Macintosh XL Screen Kit.
